Movie Reviews of A Month by the Lake

Movie Review: story going nowhere....
Summary: 2 Stars

I was encouraged to see this movie as a prelude to me and my wifes trip to Como. And rightly so, the scenary is nice (not magnificent) and true. It looks like all scenes, including indors, are filmed at location.
But the story and the acting suites as an afternoon tv movie at best. Specially Uma Thurman looks like overplaying every scene.

Movie Review: Month By the Lake
Summary: 2 Stars

This is an okay movie. The scenery is beautiful, but the story line is just okay. I think they tried too hard to make another "Tea With Mussolini," but it didn't work. The actors did a fine job, but Edward Fox just didn't cut a romantic figure for me.

Movie Review: Nice Scenery
Summary: 2 Stars

The acting and screen-play are poor (i could be wrong), but the scenery, and cinematography that captures it, are beautiful.

I would suggest Enchanted April.

Movie Review: Terrible
Summary: 1 Stars

It is 1937, and a spunky spinster (Vanessa Redgrave) is spending a month at a villa on Lake Como. There she is intrigued by a pompous old major (Edward Fox), but he has eyes only for a lovely but cruel young nanny (Uma Thurmon).

How could a movie about beautiful Lake Como and a lovelorn English lady go wrong? Apparently, very easily. This terribly-misguided movie has a juvenile script, hammy actors, and poor direction. Even the wardrobe, makeup, and hairdos are way off, looking like contemporary styles rather than pre-WWII. The attraction between the spinster and the major is never explained and their bantering is off-putting as well as boring. Thurmon over-enunciates every syllable and shouts like she's doing a (bad) high school play. None of the stars is believable in their roles.

Despite the picturesque location, there's absolutely nothing romantic about this movie. Disappointing.

Movie Review: Lacking in substance
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this movie because of the star power and because of the location on Lake Como. Redgrave wasted her time and was surprisingly awful in this movie. The plot was weak and seemed to have little direction. What a shame! For a lovely movie set in Italy try Enchanted April or my House in Umbria instead. Both excellent.
