Movie Reviews of A Man and a WomanMovie Review: DVD and VHS miss out. What a pity!!! Summary: 2 Stars
I finally got to see the DVD, and it really misses out. The original blue tinted night scenes are now black and white, the lush bedroom reds and oranges are gone. Most of it remains true, but these serious deficincies really ruin the experience, especially for those of us who saw it in the theatre and remember it very well.
The VHS, which I saw but never bought, suffers from a lethargic dubbines treatment and apparently some rough chop. I wonder if somehow the original version shown in american theatres was somehow recolorized back then. No one I know remembers it as clearly as I do, but neither version is very satisfying. Amazing how many missteps occurred in this releasing this wonderful romantic flick.
Movie Review: go get frenched... Summary: 2 Stars
all I needed to see, to write this off, was the scene where he splashes 2 guys on the roadside, his girlfriend appropriately says 'look what you've done' and he says "Hunters...no mercy for hunters"...what an officious little prick. How did he know they were hunters, and if they were, that's even worse.
Movie Review: Warners RUINED a great movie! Dubbing is AWFUL! Summary: 1 Stars
This gem of a movie blooms like a flower, with evocative scenes and music. Or at least it used to. Warner Brothers, in a collossal miscalculation, have RUINED the film by replacing the musical French dialogue with heavy-handed dubbing. OK, some movies work well when dubbed. Jackie Chan and Jet Li films come to mind. Not this delicate, lovely work.
And with all their money, where did they get these awful readers for the dubbing? It's not merely dubbed, it's clubbed. Picture someone sitting at a desk with a microphone, and reading the newspaper for you, dull and flat. Really, it sounds like that. NO LIFE to the dubbed dialogue. Wooden, stiff and flat as a plank. I wanted to watch this movie, I remember loving the film. But I pulled it out of the player, shaking my head and sighing. No kidding, the dubbing is AWFUL!
Now that I know this, I'll keep an eye out for the French version or director's cut. If you've seen this movie, you'll be sadly disappointed by this version. If you haven't seen it, wait, or you'll spoil your experience with this butchered disc.
