Movie Reviews of A Little Romance

Movie Review: A jewel of romance, don't miss it!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

A Little Romance is an enchanting film, where we found one of our favorite actresses, Diane Lane, on her debut at the tender age of 14.

The movie is a romance, the first love of a highly intelligent and precocious young woman, daughter of a woman that changes husbands as she changes shoes.

Lauren falls in love with a Parisian boy who sees too many American movies, so many in fact that he has learned to speak the language and can quote the likes of Robert Redford and Humphrey Bogart.

The mother, played by Sally Kellerman, does not approve of the relationship that develops between her daughter and the young man, who she calls a "filthy Frenchman" and she tries to destroy their romance, only to fuel their passion and as with Romeo and Juliet, they set out on an adventure that ends in beautiful Venice, sealing their love with a kiss, exchanged under the famous Bridge of Sighs.

If you have ever traveled to Paris, Verona and Venice you will simply fall in love with this film and with the views of these magnificent locations. Our favorite performance was that of Sr. Laurence Olivier, who meets this young couple and becomes the protector that ensures their ability to run away in search of adventure. Without a doubt... don't miss this jewel!

Movie Review: A beautiful gem of a movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I was sorry to have missed this when it came out (in 1979 when I was 18), then forgot about it for many years. The other day I saw a picture of Diane Lane, and remembered this movie, and decided it would be a good family film that my wife and 2 oldest kids (girl 12, boy 15) would enjoy.

It was indeed. I don't have much to add to the glowing reviews others have already given it here; I'll just note that

1) There are so many subtle grace notes that repeated viewings will be well repaid
2) It is not suitable for 10 and under, due to sexual references
3) I wish even more now that I'd seen "A Little Romance" when it came out, its existence in my memory would have enriched my life for the past 24 years

What really makes the movie a classic is bullseye performers by ALL the actors. The hardest kind of character for an actor to play is an extremely intelligent one, only very intelligent actors can do it, and the two leads are up to it. (Too bad the scriptwriter uses the word "etymological" once when he means "ontological", it is the kind of mistake Lauren would never have made, but this is the tiniest possible blemish, and no movie this rich can avoid having a handful of forgivable glitches).

Movie Review: A beautiful little gem!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of those beautifully filmed and well-acted movies that stayed below radar for me these past few decades, only to be recently discovered whilst browsing through my Netflix rental site. What a gem! Diane Lane in her acting debut does an excellent job in her lead role as Lauren, a 13-year-old intelligent, wise beyond her years girl whose affinity for books is shared by a French boy played by Thelonius Bernard. They share similar philosophies and interests and when Lauren's mom throws a fit about Lauren's new boyfriend, the teens decide to run away on a romantic quest. Their destination: Venice, Italy. They have an able co-conspirator in the form of the dashing Sir Laurence Olivier, who aids and abets them in their romantic adventure.

This is truly a lovely love story in its innocence and a portrayal of a magical time in a youngster's life - a time of discovery and first love. Diane Lane and Thelonius Bernard do an able job in credibly portraying two teens in love with each other and in love with adventure. The cinematography is beautiful as is the beguiling score. Highly recommended for die-hard romantics!

Movie Review: Most Beautiful Coming-of-age Film Ever Made
Summary: 5 Stars

This film is so beautiful, it is hard to start a review of it.

In many ways, it is pure fantasy; from beginning to end it is nothing but unlikely circumstances. This doesn't matter at all, though, because the film is not plot driven. It is one of the most unabashedly emotional films ever made, and viewed with that in mind, it delivers something very, very special.

Anyone that has been in love in youth will find something ideal in this film. It mixes the most powerful emotions of love with those of despair in a perfectly natural way, and in a way that is unforgettable. The acting is great, the scenery is beautiful, and the payoff is painful, but transcendent. It is a difficult movie to watch in some ways, and the end is especially difficult, but it is unforgettable.

It is both a tearjerker and an invitation to love. It is a beautiful film, and anyone who has ever been in love when he or she was young will find it sympathetic. Just be prepared to cry. This is a lovely piece of cinema.

Movie Review: One of my favorites!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a wonderful movie and I wish the motion pictures could go back to the days when we didn't have all of this crappy computer generated imagery flying at us every second of the day. if you are the type person wants to see a lot of explosions, computer-generated images and shallow plots, then this movie isn't for you.

However, if you like a motion picture that is about people which has real talent in it, a great cast, excellent writing and superb directing this is the movie for you.

I saw A Little Romance back in the 1970s when it first came out, I was in love with it then and I'm in love with it now. Believe it or not, before the Internet revolution and the birth of Amazon, I had a heckuva time trying to find a copy of this movie and I am so pleased that I could get a copy of it this easily. It is a sheer joy to watch and it will be a perennial favorite at my home for a long time.
