Movie Reviews of A Little Night MusicMovie Review: WOW! Coming to DVD at last! Summary: 4 Stars
I saw this filmed version of Sondheim's "Little Night Music" back in the 70's and I was enchanted! I haven't seen a staged version, but, as a Stephen Sondheim fan, I didn't feel cheated by the film. Elizabeth Taylor is just fine and she is more than ably supported by an extraordinarily appealing cast. So I anxiously await the DVD release; any copy of it will be superior to the look of the VHS version; and it's a great musical that deserves to be seen by a larger audience.
Movie Review: Amusing story with great music. Summary: 4 Stars
I have the video and would love for it to be released on DVD. It's mildly entertaining with some great musical features. Lesley-Anne Down is very good as the virginal wife of an older man. The interwoven relationships of the characters presents an amusing (if somewhat disturbing) situation when mismatched lovers find themselves vacationing together in the country. Even if the story doesn't keep you interested, the musical score should.
Movie Review: Underrated film Summary: 4 Stars
While this may not be a perfect version of "A Little Night Music", it is still worth watching, simply for the performance of Dame Diana Rigg. It is a shame that all of the musical numbers were not included, and I wish that there were extras on the DVD, but who knows if the cut scenes still exist. This was definitely a musical made in the tradition of movie musicals from the 50's.
All in all, a film worth seeing.
Movie Review: A little review Summary: 4 Stars
I consider myself an unconditional admirer of Stephen Sondheim. So much so that when there is an interesting Sondheim show on in either New York or London I try to get there although I live in Chile.
Pitty that in this film they decided to cut two very interesting songs: "Liasons" and "My husband the pig"
Having said that I thing that it is a very pleasant film, thanks to Diana Rigg more than to Elizabeth Taylor
Movie Review: See it for Riggs Summary: 4 Stars
I am delighted that this is finally coming to DVD. I have watched the poor quality VHS many times. It is worth seeing just for Diana Riggs, if nothing else. However, there are other pluses. Taylor is not a singer but she is a great actress. Sondheim lyrics are wry and often poignant. True, songs were cut, but what is there is very entertaining. The costumes are great, too.
