Canada Movie Reviews of A Letter to Three WivesMovie Review: Good "Darnell" flick! She and Thelma Ritter steal the show!
Joe Mankewicz's screenplay won an Oscar for its talky, witty script. The all-star cast couldn't have been bettered. Linda Darnell is the star of this one though as her character steals the show along with the fabulous "supporting actress" Thelma Ritter who plays a ditsy maid named Sadie. The interplay between Darnell and Paul Douglas is priceless. Jeanne Crain and her husband (played by Jeffrey Lynn) are o.k. but their scenes are slow-moving. Rita (Ann Sothern) and her husband (Kirk Douglas in a wasted role) are a little better but cannot equal the sparks that fly between Darnell and Douglas. Mankiewicz's Screenplay won an Oscar for him but aside from Darnell, Douglas and Ritter's scenes, I find the film a little too talky. An unbilled "Celeste Holm" is the voice-over for "Addie Ross", the woman who writes the letter to the three wives. There is a so-so commentary on the film and a dandy extra...A&E's Biography of "Linda Darnell...Fallen Angel". That alone is worth the price of this DVD. The other extras include subtitles in English and French, 1949 Oscar newsreel footage and the original theatrical trailer. This movie may not appeal to everyone and if you want action, you won't get it here. The movie is all talk as I said. It is "Darnell's" film in the scenes she's in!
