Movie Reviews of A Letter to Three WivesMovie Review: A Letter to Three Wives Summary: 5 Stars
The legendary Joe Mankiewcz received direction and screenplay Oscars for this sharp little gem, too often eclipsed by his masterful follow-up, "All About Eve". "Wives" uses a clever narrative device to explore the pettiness of small-town life, and the foibles and insecurities in three marriages, as the three women react to the mysterious note by taking stock of their lives, each knowing one of them is in for a big shock at day's end. Intelligent, incisive, and adult romantic drama. Look for Kirk Douglas in an early role as one of the husbands.
Movie Review: JOSEPH L. MANKIEWICZ, OPUS 6 Summary: 5 Stars
***** 1949. Written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Two Film Academy awards (Best Director and Best Screenplay) and a nomination in the Best Picture category. Addie Ross writes to three women that she's just left town with one of their husbands. This social study about couples in 1949 is still accurate today thanks to the intelligence of Mankiewicz who manages, in 103 minutes, to talk about social humiliation, the role of the man in a couple, the power of advertising, the American dream and women who earn their lives. Masterpiece.
Movie Review: A Gem Summary: 5 Stars
Every character is well defined. Some are surprises-Kirk Douglas playing someone who uses brains instead of brawn, Linda Darnell someone who loves and stays loyal to the ugly mug (Paul Douglas). I particularly liked that a strong, financially successful woman(Ann Sothern) could be allowed to have a higher profile thatn her huband(Kirk Douglas). I do not think the plot has become dated over time. We still seem to have these questions in our relationships today-did I treat my spouse fairly, would my spouse leave me for someone else?
Movie Review: I love this sort of movie.... Summary: 5 Stars
This is the sort of movie that I love stumbling on. I love Linda Darnell movies and she isn't deemed as one of the greatest actresses but in truth, she is a great character actress. In this movie she is classic. This is one of those gems from the golden age of moviemaking, you know most people just don't understand that there is something about these movies, there were no special effects so people actually had to have a story.
Watch it once, you will love it. You will feel like a queen in a silver frame. :)
