Movie Reviews of A Home of our OwnMovie Review: Great film, great performances..... Summary: 4 Stars
I actually give this 4 1/2 stars. The reason I don't give it the full five is because 1) I saw no need for the foul language the writers incorporated into the script and to display the mother influencing it on her children.....(this could have been a super-clean family G-rated movie...with a better job of editing and a tighter, cleaner screenplay. We need more of this in our morally decadent society today. And 2), at the end.....I wanted to see the inside of the new house!!! It may be a silly, moot point and maybe it wasn't in the budget to create a set or film inside a new house with mom and the kids in awestricken wonder....thanking God for the blessings he gave to them after all they went through.
Nevertheless, it is still great film fare with great performances by everyone....(the kids in the cast tug at your heartstrings...especially the fine performance by Edward Furlong as Shayne.
Kathy Bates, as always, is right on target and the chemistry between her and the kids is great!
The DVD has no english subtitles, only French and Spanish which is unfortunate for the hearing impaired. Also included is the theatrical trailer. Except for the profanity, this is a great film of inspiration, determination and hope.
One question, though.....if it was a true story....why, at the end of the credits does we have: "The events and people portrayed in this photoplay are purely fictitious. Any resemblence to persons living or dead is purely coincdental." And if it is a true story, what and whom is it based on?
Movie Review: True Story Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great True Story about a struggling family. Makes you appretiate every little thing
Movie Review: family values? Summary: 2 Stars
About half way through this movie it hit me how and why Hollywood and various journalists had heaped praise upon A Home of Our Own as fine family fare: it spews, through the endlessly repeated cursings od star Kathy Bates, contempt for and reviles the " g...d.. Irish Catholic" father.
A Home of Our Own promotes the Feminist cliches with the self-sufficient, never-say-die single woman constantly reminding the audience that her dead husband was worthless. It promotes the cliches of both the national WASP establishment and the Jewish elites of Hollywood, journalism, and academia with Bates' foul-mouthed contempt for the Catholic Church and Irishness.
What is wrong with that, beside the fact that no can can make and get aired a film that does the opposite, is that this mess is marketed as family entertainment. That is like claiming that The Last Temptation of Christ is a Christian movie.
Movie Review: Very cheap looking movie, terrible script & awful acting! Summary: 1 Stars
Kathy Bates is very vulgar in this movie and it's so poorly made that I was surprised to learn it was not made for the Hallmark Channel because they air this turkey about once a month.Save your money for a real movie like Anaconda with the great Jon Voight or Prison Heat with Lori Jo Hendrix. Also, no matter what the DVD package claims, the old man from the Karate Kid movies is NOT in this movie. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!
