Movie Reviews of A History of Violence (New Line Platinum Series)

Movie Review: Good - Not Great - Cronenberg Film...
Summary: 3 Stars

I have mixed feelings about this film; I am a HUGE David Cronenberg fan and - while it does have echoes of his earlier work - it doesn't quite measure up to his past glory. It bears several of the Cronenberg trademarks: a graphic and unromantic depiction of violence and in-your-face gore (literally, sometimes). Also, even though there is only one scene of full-frontal nudity, there are a couple of graphic sex scenes.

Viggo Mortensen plays Tom Stall - a family man who owns a diner somewhere in Middle America. I understand that the movie is based on a graphic novel (unread by me) and that perhaps points to the weakness of the film. In the beginning scenes, Stall and his family come across as caricatures of the All-American family - they are almost too good to be true. His son, Jack, is a good boy who gets picked on at school because he won't fight back. "We don't solve our problems in this family by hitting," his father admonishes him.

Everything changes when Stall's diner gets invaded by bad men who are obviously going to rob the place and kill everybody - or worse! All of a sudden, pacifist Tom turns into a commando and neatly does away with them. He becomes an instant hero/celebrity, but you can tell he doesn't like it. The next day, a mysterious stranger played by Ed Harris shows up. He claims that Tom is really a bad man named Joey Cusack. Is he really? It isn't obvious. If he is, will his family and town protect him?

Some of the negative criticism of this movie that I have read asks, "Is that all there is?" There is a feeling of thinness to the movie once you reach the end. We tend to expect more from Cronenberg. It ends up being a re-tread of the themes of Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven. Yet, it is violent enough and compelling enough to hold your attention and it is better than much of the studio fare currently available.
