Movie Reviews of A Hard Day's Night

Movie Review: It Automatically gets 5 Stars but...
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great movie. A piece of history that everyone remotely connected to or interested in western culture should see. The great Roger Ebert said it best, "One of the great life-affirming landmarks of the movies". I still love the scene where Paul's grandfather pops up during "She Loves You"- a really pure and funny scene.

That said the criticisms about the sound quality are unfortunately true. I was expecting a lot more oomph when I heard the opening 12 string Rickenbacher chime for the title song. Now I want to find the original dvd release that everyone is speaking of so fondly here.

There are also some bad copies out there. I bought mine right away and had to return and replace it because of some digital freeze frame gobbledegook. The second copy worked fine. But I know of one other person here in Boston who had the same problem.

Also what the hell is up with the packaging? This is A Hard Days Night for God's sake. Miramax made it look like those cheesey Millenium Collection cd's. I didn't recognize it at all in the store.

Even still I will play it again, and again, and again. Just like I did in 1985 when I first saw it on videotape. This time playing along on my Rickenbacher and 6 string acoustic... pretending to be a Beatle in my living room.

Movie Review: Quit your complaining!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is excellent with some really funny scenes in it in addition to the musical numbers. Plus I only saw the VHS version of it that came out last year and for me the quality was still great. The music sure sounds clean and crisp to me and does sound like it's in true stereo, not the fake stereo or mono versions that others have said. I think DVD's are truthfully highly overrated anyway. As long as you have a decent tv and speakers hooked up, even VHS movies look and sound great. I have seen many DVD movies and none of them blew me away because of their sound and picture quality. I'm not saying that We Were Soldiers, Windtalkers, Mr. Deeds, and Spiderman weren't great, but the quality and sound wasn't much different than the countless other VHS movies I've seen. All you DVD fans are nuts in my opinion. DVD is not the wave of the future or other nonsense that others have led you to believe. VHS is still great and worthwhile period. DVD's are only great in that the discs are more sturdy than VHS tapes, but only a few tapes I've had have gotten messed up--with most of them being just fine. Keep your VHS movies everyone and don't let the complainers get you down. A Hard Day's Night is a wonderful movie in every way, especially in VHS!!!

Movie Review: Don't Listen to the Other reviews
Summary: 5 Stars

... You have to love the Beatles . ...

The movie is filmed in black and white, because that's what they had in those days. Those of you who remember the true early days of the Beatles will have already bought this movie. Those of you who are new to the genre, should take the chance. Remember, this movie is a comedy!!

Most of the movie is about Ringo being manipulated by Paul's grandfather (a `mixer' i.e. troublemaker), and the way the lads were manipulated by the press. The ultimate plot is their escaping from the presshounds.

And the script was purposely written very loosely, allowing for the Beatles to completely adlib the movie. There are off cheek remarks, cockney slang, and the fab Four themselves just running amok prior, during, and after the `tv spot' exposure they found themselves trapped within.

this is not `Help', which was a complete romp, but a sarcastic comment on the exploitation of rock stars.

Again, this film is A COMEDY! Go with it!! True Beatle fans will own this DVD the day it comes out. They will sing along with it, and dance in front of their televisons while the DVD hums happily. The rest of you will be lucky if it ever shows up on cable, EVER, and curse yourselves when you find out it is hard to find.

Movie Review: The Beatles at their best
Summary: 5 Stars

This film shows the Beatles as they were when they were young and fresh and charming and before they had started to take themselves seriously. The story of a trip to London to record a TV show gives ample opportunity for the larking about they did so well,as they sing and play and joke their way through the film in their inimitable way. There is a wonderful perfomance from Wilfred Brambel as Paul's malicious old Irish grandfather, doing his best to stir up trouble throughout the film, and fine performances too from Norman Rossington as their long-suffering manager, John Junkin as his bemused assistant, and Victor Spinetti as the show's harassed producer. The highlight of the film comes with a mad chase scene as the Beatles are pursued through the streets by a horde of policemen. And then there's the bit where Wilfrid Bramble comes up through the floor in the middle of the show, oh it's great. Sad to remember how they changed when they turned into hippies and started taking drugs and spouting drivel. Particularly strange to look at that sweet fresh-faced boy Paul, and think of what a pompous pretentious prat he is these days. Never mind. Forget what jackasses they became later, just enjoy this wonderful film.

Movie Review: When times were simpler
Summary: 5 Stars

It's amazing how much of the Fab Four was captured in a low budget film that really has no plot, start or ending, cost less to make than their first record, and is about as Anti-Holly Wood as you could get[and the film was nominated for 3 Oscars]. Just a , "day in the life" sort of spontaneous quality that is full of energy, great music, and the innocence of the Beatles, before they became, "ARTISTS." [I can remember watching it in a theater and all the girls screaming-at a film!].I think many won't understand the movie or the impact of the Beatles because you almost had to be there to witness the start of a musical evolution, that's effects continue through today. Make sure you watch all of the extra material that was thrown in-it's amazing how much of the movie was literally, off the cuff or impromptu.
Add George Martin & Son's remix of a Beatle's Medly, "Beatles Love" as a companion and you really have a nice surprise in store.
Now if Paul can get permission from John & George's wives to release many Beatles songs never heard before, we will be in for much more of Lennon-McCartney's song writing genius, the best in music history which will span the past and presence into another revolution.
