Movie Reviews of A Fistful of DollarsMovie Review: Flawed Classic Summary: 4 Stars
From the opening gun battle (get three coffins ready) - (my mistake, four coffins) to the final showdown with Ramone, this movie rattles along, never losing pace. It serves as a prequel to "For a Few Dollars More" and "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" and its status as a prototype shows in the way that Leone has yet to perfect his extended set-piece battles and the build up of scenes to such an extent that they only just fall short of the ludicrous. This serves as the (very good)opening chapter, the later installments being near perfect. Without the later films, this would be the bottom line in western adventures. It is through no fault of this film that it is overshadowed by its own sequels, but it is, and it suffers because of it. A major gripe, however, is the almost complete lack of extras on the DVD.If you own the others, buy this to complete the set. If you don't, buy them first.
Movie Review: This is what a re-working should be Summary: 4 Stars
Often times when I watch a film that has been "reimagined" from a previous one, I lose interest within the first few scenes. That was not the case with "Fistful of Dollars". Having "Yojimbo" and "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" as two of my favorite films, I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie. I was nicely rewarded with my expectations being met, as well as pleased by how FoD kept my interest throughout. The styling of Sergio Leone that I love so much was present throughout the film. The story from Akira Korusawa's film was changed in such a way that it both held my interest and I didn't feel put off or disjointed by the changes. There are far more in depth reviews available here, so I'll simply end by saying that if you like the Clint Westerns, I highly recommend this film. Also, of course, you MUST see "Yojimbo"...preferably first.
Movie Review: First Important Spaghetti... Summary: 4 Stars
No more Rawhide for Clint Eastwood,as the stranger rides on to Italy to meet a legendary director by the name of Sergio Leone to make this classic western that started a trilogy and a genre like no other, loaded with the distinctive richocet sound of bullets, the sun blazed deserts of the Madrid, the rolling hills of landscape and the ever lasting bold scenery. These were hardened men from a way of life growing up in the old west, where survival was a reliable .44 - where violence was just an ordinary daily routine, and the women were mainly the Ladies of the night of local saloons. The music, the unique music scores in these spaghetti's always seem to fit in with each scene, giving it that western feel ,kind of like,"ghost riders in the sky",although some scores should have been shot, and there's always the "go for the gold" plot, just remember "A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS",started it all.
Movie Review: Good Western Summary: 4 Stars
This is one of Clint Eastwood's westerns where he rides into town, accomplishes a purpose, rides out again, and fades into the sunset, leaving the women and the gold behind. That is in sharp contrast to "Paint Your Wagon," where he stayed with the woman, or "Kelly's Heroes," where he kept the gold. It is not an award winner, but is a solid western. The best of his western films is "The Unforgiven."
The setting for this motion picture is across the border in a small Mexican town. He finds himself caught in the middle between two families fighting over a lucrative border trade, selling guns to Indians, etc. He sets the two sides against each other, saving the good people and killing the bad, before he fades away.
It is worth watching if you like westerns. Other reviewers have covered various details.
Movie Review: Great movie Summary: 4 Stars
I had waited a long time to have this movie, along with "For a Few dollars more" and "The good, the bad and the ugly", and fortunately enough I had access to this version of it. Great DVD, I wasn't aware but the DVD includes a standard and a widescreen version, so you can watch it whatever way you like. The only things in this version that feel a bit cheap are the lack of an informative booklet, and some more bonus features, which in this DVD are limited to the theatrical trailer only. Maybe other versions have these two things, but I must recognize I went for the price of this DVD. Anyway, I wanted the movie more than any booklet, so I consider myself satisfied. But if you want a better array of contents, maybe do some research here at Amazon, and probably a "fancier" version will be found. Great movie, never gets old!
