Movie Reviews of A Far Off PlaceMovie Review: No politically correct nonsense here Summary: 4 Stars
I've voiced my displeasure at the current state of Disney movies before and pointed out how vastly different they are in the 21st Century to movies that were made as recently as the 90s.
Reese Witherspoon plays Nonnie Parker and Ethan Embry her reluctant friend Harry. Both kids are living with their parents in rural Africa when their home is attacked by Ivory poachers. With their bushman friend Xhabbo as a guide the kids take off across the Kalahari desert to reach the safety of the coast and nearest town, while the poachers plan to kill off their only witnesses.
A Far Off Place opens with the massacre of a herd of elephants. The killers themselves are then mercilessly gunned down by supporting hero Col. Theron. Would Disney DARE allow a scene like this in the 21st Century? Look at the quality of Tim Allen's The Shaggy Dog and you'll find your answer. For any family-orientated movie it takes some nerve to open with killing such as this but even 16-year-old Nonnie herself is at ease yielding a rifle and doesn't hesitate to blow-up bad guys.
The African desert scenery is gorgeous and director Mikael Salomon (who also made the underrated Hard Rain) fills the movie with lovely cinematography. The dunes, the blue sky, the night sky...it all makes you wish for a sunny holiday.
A Far Off Place (a combination of two novels "A Story Like the Wind" and "A Far-Off Place" by Laurens Van der Post) is not a well known movie and is quite hard to find, but it's worth hunting down. A shame that such a good movie has fallen off the radar.
Movie Review: I loved this movie, it was great. And am thrilled . . . Summary: 4 Stars
I loved this movies and am thrilled about its release on dvd. Unfortunatley, as I have been noticing a lot lately, the cover advertises this as an "early" Reese Witherspoon film. Give me a break! All I see lately are DVDs being advertised for the people who star in them, as opposed to the film themsleves. An actor is important, but so is content, and in this case, so are the other two leads in this film, Sarel Bok and Ethan Randall/Embry. Being an early Reese film should not give her automatic top billing because she has become so popular lately. The original cover for the video release years ago was much better. Anyways, I've whined enough, the cover is just anoying, but the film is quite good and one of my favorites. Although reading some other reviews, it is sorely lacking from other perspectives. I bought the books for my neice, and I guess will have to get them for myself so i can draw a proper comparison between the two mediums. Good film, good acting, lack of reality not withstanding.

Movie Review: Good Movie Summary: 4 Stars
I had seen it on TV when I was younger and really enjoyed it. I thought of it recently and decided to find it...it's still about the same as I remembered. Cute ending, too. :)
Movie Review: bleh Summary: 2 Stars
This movie was so predictable it made me sick. They turned a powerful captivating book into generic average american teenager trash. Though i wasnt particulaly fond of the 2 main charactors in the book they had depth, and they werent so predictable. And what may i ask happend to the plot? instead of communists being the villians it was verry capitalist greedy moneymen.kinda ironic... and where is the african culture? the great singing tree of the makoba? the magic? Also its play at feminism was amusing. How is the strong masculine heroine weakening throughout the movie as she falls in love feminist? Read the books instead.
