Movie Reviews of A Double Life

Movie Review: Trouble Double
Summary: 2 Stars

I had high hopes before watching this, as a real Ronald Colman fan, but unfortunately, this is not a very good film. It clearly only won an Oscar for Colman because of the scenery chewing aspect of it (the Academy loves this sort of thing, cf. Natalie Portman as a similar kind of actor gone mad), especially when there is real scenery chewing -- actors going mad and bad. The plot is ridiculous, and the various ways in which the scenario plays out are clunky at best. It is hard to believe that Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin had anything to do with this -- check out their Hepburn/Tracy films for some decent work. There are a few moments of amusing filagree (wigmakers chat!) and some theatrical back and forth here and there. The two good things in the film are Ronald Colman early on when he begins to be bewildered and lose his way -- not the Othello bits! -- and the young blowsy Shelley Winters. The rest is complete hokum. One of the runners up in the "what is the worst film to garner Academy Awards?" sweepstakes -- though there is a long, long list.
