Movie Reviews of A Clockwork OrangeMovie Review: One of Kubrick's great masterpieces. Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the few movies that is visual theater. Just sit back and let all the images and sounds spill over you. Kubrick uses violent scenes that should revolt you, while playing light ballet music in contrast. John Anthony Burgess Wilson wrote the novel in a hybrid slang language that is great fun to wade through and learn. This movie only touches on that but that's ok, because it is one of the great classics of the big screen. The third time you watch this, look at all the paintings and scenery that you don't usually notice. Everything is coreographed, like 2001 was. Perfect. When the DVD comes out, I'll buy it, but I will have to watch it alone, because of the graphic violence - and I NEVER like violent movies. This is just that good. Six stars - with a warning.
Movie Review: A near masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
To try and summarise this film in a few lines, or not repeat what has already been said many times before, is almost impossible. This movie shows a true master craftman at the height of his powers, threading so many different scenes together in a way that the whole is far beyond the sum of its parts. The use of music is exceptional, the acting superb (clearly McDowell's best performance) and the direction simply peerless. As a typical Kubrick film, the first viewing may leave you feeling alittle unsure of what to think, but go back and watch again, for as Speilberg put it 'the more you watch Kubrick's films, the better they become and that is the mark of a true talent'. Or, perhaps in this case, more appropriately, as Alex puts it 'Viddy well, thy brother, viddy well'.
Movie Review: Classic satire Summary: 5 Stars
Despite comments to the contrary, the version of Clockwork Orange on DVD is the original version. The differences in the ratings have more to do with revisions to the original MPAA codes and the passage of time more than anything else. Kubrick's adaption of Burgess' novel is a sort of inverted Pygmalion. As brilliant as Burgess' novel (Burgess himself acknowledged as much stating that Kubrick's film was a "radical remaking of my own novel" that was every bit Kubrick's as the source material was Burgess)is, the film brings some of the best sequences in the novel to life with stunning, brutal clarity and satiric wit. Kubrick's most controversial film ( perhaps even more so than Lolita), this is a classic film that is a radical as mainstream cinema gets.
Movie Review: Oddly enjoyable, equally groundbreaking Summary: 5 Stars
Everyone speaks about this film as how groundbreaking it was back when it was first made. Mostly i am at a loss to see a film that has come even close in the last 30 years. Its one of the best movies ive ever seen for so many reasons. I do understand the graphic nature of this film, but if you consider what goes on in this world everyday the film is actually quite tame. It's insights to our culture as a people, the way we interact with one another, our impact on the world based on how we are raised, its all in here. No stone is left unturned in this film, and i believe its that kind of no-apologies exhibition of themes in this film that actually entertains me time and time again. Thanks stanley kubrick for creating one of the best fictional films of all time.
Movie Review: The Most Harrowing of 'Horrorshows'.... Summary: 5 Stars
This is beyond question Kubrick's Magnum Opus. If there was ever a more brutal and disturbing vision of the "near future" I have yet to see it ... Many faint of heart or excessively prudish film-goers might condemn this landmark film for it's graphic treatment of rape and "ultra-violence".... but this was Kubrick's main intent ...to traumatize the viewer in to meaningful discussion about the direction modern society was (and is) heading. I will NEVER forget the first time I saw this mindblower back in 1972. It literally blew me away. I couldnt stop thinking about some of those imfamous scenes for weeks. For anyone who has yet had the pleasure, be ready for quite a psyche-shock...I promise you...you'll never be the same again.....
