Movie Reviews of A Clockwork OrangeMovie Review: Surpasses Anthony Burgess' novel Summary: 5 Stars
Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" is the rare case of a film that even surpasses its already very good source material. In fact, this is one of the best films of Stanley Kubrick (or anyone else). Not only is the film brilliantly acted, scripted and photographed. It has also one of the most original production designs I have ever seen in a movie. But what really makes the picture transcend the novel is Kubrick's brilliant use of music. This adds a dimension to the whole enterprise the book did not have. The scene in which Alex is forced to watch documentary-footage of the Nazis underscored by the ninth symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven is unforgettable. Actually, the whole movie is one memorable scene after another. This film has been largely and uncritically admired as a cult hit by fans of violent movies. Other felt uncomfortable after it because it just shows problems without giving answers. I think that this is the film's strength. Kubrick invites us to figure out for ourselves what his film is all about and this includes the possibility of different answers (or no clear answer at all).
Movie Review: A Clockwork Orange is top notch! Summary: 5 Stars
A Clockwork Orange is nothing short of one of the most fantastic movies of all time. Its premise is dark, brooding, yet all too realistic. A gang of thugs out of control, led by Alex (the main character), is warped by visions of rape and violence by which they rule the streets. Suddenly, the leader is under State arrest and there is a plan to "cure" him of his dementia. The plan involves psychoanalytic therapy, a "good 'ol dose of his own medicine", so to speak. Forced to view movies depicting the same violence he brought upon others, young Alex seems cured.. but is he?? That's where the fun begins in ACO, a raucous, shocking, intelligent, vibrant, and potent film that leaves you with more questions than answers. Never have I seen a film so original and so unnerving at the same time. This is definitely a classic, even if it remains to be "unknown" by the general movie population (snubbed at the Oscars in '71). I saw this when I was 9 years old, read the original novel at age 10, and have yet to see a movie come close to its impact (some 15 years later and counting...)
Movie Review: Simply the best Summary: 5 Stars
Stanley Kubricks A Clockwork Orange must surely rate up there with the likes of Star Wars and the Godfather when historians come to name the most influential motion picture of all time. It simply excels and appeals to everyone who ever sees it. Speaking as a resident of the UK, it has been annoying having to make do with grainy NTSC copies of this film and more recently the DVD in disappointing mono. It is worth boasting though that we in the UK had Clockwork Orange back in our cinemas last year, to triumphant reviews, and Warner have thrilled us all with a sparklingly clean DVD transfer on Region 2, which beats the Region 1 transfer hands down (I have both) but far more importantly the Region 2 DVD has been mastered into 5.1 digital. Nice to see Region 2 get the better deal now and again!!!! For all you Clockwork Orange fanatics out there, import the Region 2 copy and sit right in the middle of all that ultraviolence, slooshy the sounds of the gang fight in the old opera house as if you are actually there. Fantastic. A timeless film that will live forever. (ps. we get a 5.1 version of 2001 too!!!)
Movie Review: How anyone could give one star is beyond me. Summary: 5 Stars
Try 100 stars and you might be close. True this movie isn't for my Grandparents or thier friends. I don't think they would enjoy it. But for most mature people that like to use their head and experience something that is more than just a movie then this is for them. If you only watch this movie once you are only getting about a fourth of the total experience and maybe understanding about one fifth of what was said. You really have to watch this movie at least two or three times to really get it. This is the best movie I have ever seen and I thought this even before I knew who Stanley Kubrick was! I have continued to enjoy every viewing of this movie over the last fifteen years or there abouts that I have been watching it. By far Kubrick's most meaningful and will be his longest lasting work (even more than Dr. Strangelove). One hundred years into the future this movie will still be modern in every way. Whoever gives this movie one star has simply got some sort of agenda. It should be a crime to try to stop someone from experiencing this movie. Pure horror show.
