Movie Reviews of A Clockwork OrangeMovie Review: There are pointless, violent films... Summary: 5 Stars
but A Clockwork Orange isn't one of them. All the one star reviews that fixate on the ultra-violent first third of the movie do a disservice to the whole. Unlike Hitchhiker, Friday The 13th Part VII and that ilk, there are ideas expressed in this one. What they are, I suppose, is open to interpretation. The movie is divided into thirds: An introduction to little Alex who seems incapable of moral choice, i.e., a misbegotten clockwork orange. Second, his attempted 'rehabilitation' by a weary society at its wits end ('We've been studying the problem for well over a century, yet we get no further with our studies'), i.e. a modified, misbegotten clockwork orange still incapable of choice. And, finally, the aftermath of the treatment, where society realizes its 'mistake' and returns little Alex to his formal self. The final words of the film drip with irony as little Alex proclaims, "I was cured allright." I haven't read the book in 30 years, but from other reviews I guess that Burgess had little Alex finally realize the error of his ways and choose goodness. I don't know, somehow I prefer Kubrick's ending. I like to believe that I'm good because I don't get off on torturing others for my own self-gratification and not just because it's, like, against society. As for Kubick's depiction of women in the film, remember that this movie was made in 1970 as a futuristic sci-fi thriller. Looking at some Calvin Klein commercials 30 years later, I can't see how he was terribly far off the mark.
Movie Review: A classy masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
A Clockwork OrangeScore: 97/100 There are certain films by certain director's which are placed in a Stood-The-Test-Of-Time Hall of Fame. A Clockwork Orange is certainly one of them that has been in there for quite some time, and after 26 years, this masterpiece is still giving people the `treatment' that A Clockwork Orange always has. Alex (Malcolm McDowell), a violent juvenile in the near future, is caught after a number of brutal rapes and murders. While imprisoned, he submits to a controversial experiment to make criminals ill at the mildest suggestion of violence or conflict. Now Alex's victims want to welcome him back into society with the same enthusiasm Alex had always exhibited when performing his crimes. A breathtakingly simply story line in a brilliantly complex film. It keeps you hooked and it stays in your mind long after the credits have rolled, what more do you need? Just in case you're saying `more,' I'll give you more. How about Kubrick's oh-so-extraordinary vision through a near-future Britain with his groundbreaking script and typically mindblowing direction effort? Or what about Malcolm McDowell's stunner of a performance in a stunner of a film? This has often been called Kubrick's best movie ever, and although in my opinion, Dr. Strangelove takes that award, A Clockwork Orange is still a classy masterpiece that will flutter around in the back of your head long after the tape has been returned. Simply masterful, A Clockwork Orange is a film that is no to missed, and not to be messed with.
Movie Review: ''A master piece oh my brothers'' Summary: 5 Stars
Number one, some people seem argue this film is'sickening'. Well, if you actually understood the political andpersonal meaning behind the story then you would realise Burgess' intent in sickening the viewer/reader. (And despite the films age and its lack of superficial special effects it does, through dramatic close up's and masterful music)in order to get his argument of social freedom over political restraint. The original book is based on the rape of Anthony Burgess' wife, yet despite this Burgess and Kuberick manages to hypnotise the reader/viewer into feeling sympathy for Alex and hatred toward the oppressive government. The second argument you hear is that of 'I cant understand it'. Welly welly welly, go and read the book then. The whole point of the invented teenage language and sereal dress is to mask the violence Alex and his droogs manifest. Ok this idea does not travel well onto screen but youve got to admit it is very well acted and anyone who has read the book will appreciate it. Finally to anyone who is thinking of watching the film, do so it is brillaint especially in the cinema (The DVD version is also good). Although I would suggest you read the book first to appreciate the full meaning of the NASDAT language and fututistic setting. Not to mention the books ending is better by far and its violence more shocking. END
Movie Review: Among Kubrick's best Summary: 5 Stars
Stanly Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" might just be one of the most horrific films ever put to screen. With it's excessive violence and nudity, it is certainly not for all tastes. But while the film is shocking (even by today's standards) it also proves to be very brilliant and a very good example of excellent directing. Malcom MacDowell gives a great performance as Alex, the leader of a gang who's enjoyment is found at the unfortunate expense of others. Within the first twenty minutes of this film there are two brutal beatings and a graphic rape scene. These scenes may seem like they glorify violent behavior at first but as the story unfolds about Alex's journey through prison and his "treatment" which is supposed to cure him of his criminal behavior, much political and social commentary is found. Then Alex goes out into the real world again only to have everyone turn against him which leads him to start turning towards his older self. Kubrick really made a masterful and couragious film in 1971. With his masterful camera work and his use of music (which are both used by Scorsese and Tarantino today) Kubrick set standards that would lead to some of the classics of today. True, the film is very controversial, it stands as a legendary addition to classic cinema.

Being the adventures of a young man whose principle interests are rape, ultra-violence and beetoven. Violating, Alex and his band of merry friends run a spree of ultra-violence in Stanley Kubricks' most shocking motion picture of A Clockwork Orange. This movie is not for the people who are looking for a nice movie to view with the family. No, not at all. Alex and his band of merry men run through the town stealing, and killing people, and having a good time while doing it. So starts A Clockwork Orange, a journey through a world of decaying cities, and amoral punks, and brain washed people that form the dynamic ark that is one of the greatest motion pictures ever released. Shocking and forever remembered by everyone, the power of this movie will grab you and brainwash you into viewing this a second time to realize the beauty of this film. I'm not giving away any of the plot and although you might wish i would, viewing this motion picture for your self, you will find out that it is hugely controversial, and is still talked about today.
