Movie Reviews of A Christmas CarolMovie Review: The Most Accurate Version Ever Released! Summary: 5 Stars
I had my doubts in 1999 when I first heard that Patrick Stewart would be playing Ebenezer Scrooge. Being a fan of the novel, I decided to give it a try. I was pleasently surprised! This version is the most true representation of the novel I have ever seen! Patrick Stewart makes a good Scrooge, although some of it is silly(the laughing at the end and the changing of half a crown to shilling). Overall, this is my favorite version of A Christmas Carol. Joel Grey is superb as the Ghost of Christmas Past and Dominic West is a breath of fresh air as Fred! No one will be disappointed if they purchase this. George C. Scott is my favorite Scrooge, but this version made Patrick Stewart my number 2. Fantastic movie and a fine tribute to the spirit of Dickins masterpiece!
Movie Review: Finally, a new production that doesn't ruin a classic! Summary: 5 Stars
Each Christmas season I make it a point to see as many version of 'A Christmas Carol' as I can. It really is a timeless story which I continue to appreciate more. Having said that, some of the newer versions and adaptations are awful. Patrick Stewart gives a wonderful performance as Scrooge, and the rest of the cast fit into their roles fluidly. I've seen a stage production of `A Christmas Carol' as well, and this movie version comes closest to bringing that personal feel to the story. If you're only going to own one version, then perhaps pickup the Alastair Sim classic. However, this would be a great complement and would probably draw more interest from the kids.
Movie Review: Not as good as the original but an excellent remake Summary: 5 Stars
I am amazed at seeing how many dislike this version but love the 1984 George C. Scott version. The 1984 version was not near as good. Patrick Stewart is a very good Scrooge - not as good as Alistair Sim's, but far superior to Scott's. The effects were very well done but not "over the top". They accented the story without distracting the viewer. The worst part is that some of the actors were a bit flat in their renditions of the characters. But overall, this is a wonderful remake of the classic.
Not 5 stars, but I can't give 4.5. Add the .5 for Stewart's wonderful diction and refusal to be dragged down by the lack of supporting cast.
Movie Review: A Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart as Scrooge Summary: 5 Stars
I have been a fan of the Alastair Sim 1951 version of A Christmas Carol for many years. It is a family tradition to watch it on Christmas Eve to get in the 'spirit'. I decided to purchase the Patrick Stewart 1999 version just to see if the movie could have been improved upon. IT HAS!!
I like the concept of a younger Scrooge who really has a chance to improve his life and the lives of those around him through learning the meaning of Christmas simply because he will have more time to do something about it. Stewart's Scrooge is at least 10-15 years younger than the Sim character.
A very enjoyable update on a classic movie.
Movie Review: This is a wonderful rendition Summary: 5 Stars
I cannot believe that so many people can look at Patrick Stewart and not see what a great Scrooge he is! He is so human, and his transformation is so believable, we were moved to tears many times. And -- we are not Star Trek aficionados at all. (In fact -- I usually feel embarrassed for Mr. Stewart when I catch an episode while surfing -- because he is so much greater than his material). It's nice to see him in a role that he deserves. The special effects are very nice (not overwhelming), and all of the supporting actors are very good (not at all saccharin).
