Movie Reviews of A Christmas CarolMovie Review: As accurate and moving a version as I have ever seen Summary: 5 Stars
Although it seems to take much of its inspiration from the 1949 Alastair Sim version, Patrick Stewart's adaptation of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" is among the finest I have seen. This shouldn't be surprising; Stewart knows Dickens better than almost anyone, having done a one man stage performance of the story (all 42 parts!) for almost ten years.
What's more, the attention paid to plot and characterization in rendering to the screen what is essentially a Gothic horror tale is truly impressive. Considering the recent drive toward computer generated imagery, the minimalism exerted in portraying the supernatural in this version is truly refreshing.
The story isn't given to overly dramatic portrayals as others have been, either. The starkness, hardship, and brutality of Victorian England are all too apparent throughout this 94 minute glimpse of Dickens' creation (the scene where Scrooge's housekeepers pawn his possessions is harrowing), but still it is as uplifting as any version out there.
Movie Review: Patrick Stewart IS Scrooge Summary: 5 Stars
For years Patrick Stewart has done a one person stage version of "Christmas Carol" playing all the parts. Twice he has taken it to New York where he received rave reviews. Those of us who could not get to New York had to be satisfied with an audio tape version. Then someone had the brilliant idea of doing the video. Naturally it was expanded to have a full cast and sets. Because of his years of doing the stage version Mr. Stewart fits so easily into the role that he is not playing a part, he IS Scrooge. There are other fine versions of the story, notably the wonderful George C. Scott production, but none can compare with Mr. Stewart. The adaptation of the story to film is so true to Dickens, he must have sat on the script writers shoulder as it was written. I taped it from the TV broadcast and now can not wait for the DVD to be released. Anyone who makes "Christmas Carol" part of their holiday or just loves magnificent acting should definitely add this version to their library.
Movie Review: Magnificent! Summary: 5 Stars
Simply magnificent! Patrick Stuart and all of the actors do such a great job! I can not watch this movie enough times.
My favorite scene is when Patrick Stuart begs for forgiveness as he kneels before "The Spirit of Christmas Yet To Come" and then falls into his own grave. It is so dramatic and Patrick does such a good acting job. The viewer can truly see the agony that Scrooge feels as he tries to redeem hismself for his past sins. Then, when he wakes up on Christmas Morning, he sees that he is still alive and is so greatful...that he promises to change his ways.
Usually, I am not someone who can sit and watch a movie for 93 minutes straight. However, I have no problem watching this film fom start to finish every holiday season.
Heck, I even showed this movie to my high school students before their Christmas Vacation and their eyes were glued to the TV set. That says something! I would recommend this DVD to any fan of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol"
Movie Review: This "A Christmas Carol" is the BEST! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this movie about 5 years ago on Television and every year since I've looked for it during Christmas. Finally I looked it up on Amazon and ordered a copy. My heart went out to this man 'Scrooge' who had so many losses in his young life and which really leads to his hardened heart. It is so much more real than the old 70's version. I'm so glad that the writers really were mindful of the Christian theme of the story. The song "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", which is sung really sums up the theme of the movie. "Remember Christ our Saviour was born on Christmas Day, to save us all from Satan's Power when we've gone astray, Oh, Tidings of Comfort & Joy!" My heart ached for this man and when he came to this rebirth at the end, he was visibly filled with the 'holy spirit' and you can't help but shed a tear because you're happy for him and at the same time it's very emotional. It has many lessons to be learned by both young & old. It will be a treasure to my family for many years to come.
Movie Review: Not Humbug! Summary: 5 Stars
I have read Dicken's A Christmas Carol and this movie is the closest to the book that I have ever seen. Patrick Stewart is an awesome actor and brings power to every performance he does.I think that is why he's the only actor from the Star Trek worlds not type cast. When I see anything he's in I don't think Captain Picard but whatever role he's playing. Now I'm not saying other actors have never been as good as Scrooge, but Steward and Alister Sim in his version are the only two who could make me hate Scrooge but at the same time feel sorry for him, because he is a doomed man, doomed to spend his life in his own misery. Sterward's performance at the end warms your heart also as a man who realizes something wonderful has happened to him, he has a second chance to save himself. Because there are so many versions of this story on film I think people judge them all the same, especially the new ones, but don't pass this one by, it has become a new Christmas tradition in my home.
