Movie Reviews of A Chorus LineMovie Review: Sensational Summary: 5 Stars
I've never seen the stage version of "A Chorus Line" so my only reference point is the film version. And I thought it was great!!! This had to be difficult material to translate to film. The film starts with a stage filled with hundreds of applicants giving their all for a scant eight slots in a chorus line. With a wave of the hand the choreographer(Michael Douglas) whittles it to sixteen. The elimination process that the choreographer employs isn't so much an evaluation of dance technique. Rather, it's more like an interrogation where he asks the most personal details of the applicants lives. You sense the dreams and desperation of the auditioners. You have no real rooting interest here and you hope for the success for each of these youngsters. The songs and dance numbers are fine but it's the backstories of these fledgling hoofers that is the most compelling aspect of "A Chorus Line". There are few names in the cast of aspirants unless you count Janet Jones(Mrs. Wayne Gretzky) and Audrey Landers(of Landers Sisters fame) and Landers delivers the weakest solo in the film. This film on initial release received a lukewarm critical and public reception in 1985. There's definitely room for re-evaluation here. As far as I'm concerned "A Chorus Line" is superior to the Oscar winning "Chicago". Maybe the small screen is the perfect venue to appreciate this film. Director Richard Attenborough, who won an Oscar for "Gandhi", deserves kudoes for tackling tricky material.

Movie Review: Song, Dance, and interesting characters Summary: 5 Stars
A Chorus Line allows us to watch as a director (Michael Douglas) selects the men and women he wants in the chorus of a play he will direct. He asks the people who have come to try out to tell him something about themselves, since members of the chorus will have bit parts in the play. Among those trying out are a married couple, a woman who has acted for the Douglas character before, a young man involved in gay theater without his family's knowledge, and one of the great loves of the director's life.
While it's difficult to imagine an actual try-out being conducted along these lines, it does offer an opportunity for the audience to get to know the often-anonymous chorus and for each of the chorus members to have a moment (or more) to shine.
Movie Review: 'Chorus Line' in the Classroom Summary: 5 Stars
I teach an Introduction to Theatre and a Drama skills class. I purchased this movie to show some of my 'star-struck' students a little bit of reality: from the 'cattle-call' auditions to the 'tell me about the real you' to the final 'you all are very special' cut.
It does bring home the point that NYC is FULL of talented 'I really need this job!' triple threat people (acting, singing, dancing). And it all comes down to that 'something' that makes the director see you as that character. For a classroom intrduction to the world of Broadway musicals, this movie Works!
I also show only the 'cattle-call' scene from 'All that Jazz' to underscore the message.
Movie Review: So under-rated! Summary: 5 Stars
A Chorus Line is one of the most under-rated and barely appreciated film adapation from a broadway musical ever! I watched this movie since I was a little kid and I still adore it. It's got incredible dancing, impeccable acting from Michael Douglas (he is so heartless in this one, and I love it!) and you got flawless direction from Richard Attenbourgh. A Chorus Line is a breath of fresh air and it deserves to be treated with the respect that other musicals get. I highly recommend checking this film out. Enjoy!
