Movie Reviews of A Bronx TaleMovie Review: 'You'll Understand When You're Older' - Great Film. Summary: 5 Stars
Set in an Italian neighborhood of the Bronx in the 60's, "A Bronx Tale" is a coming of age flick about a boy (Francis Capra/Lillo Brancato) who becomes a protege of the urbane boss of the hood Sonny (Chazz Palminteri) after refusing to rat him out to the cops for a shooting. From there the boy gets some serious lessons in life in the hood under the wary and watchful eye of his hard working bus driver father (De Nero). Being De Nero's directorial debut, this film is a by-the-numbers production with a slew of stereotypical mob type caricatures and histrionics which echo of Palminteri's stage play which offers some solid light dramatic entertainment. Not too be taken seriously, "A Bronx Tale" will be a worthwhile watch for those into wise guy flicks with some heart.
Movie Review: A Bronx Tale Summary: 5 Stars
Adapted from a one-man show written and performed by Palminteri, De Niro's directorial debut resembles another coming-of-age New York mafia drama: "Goodfellas." But "Tale" is more nostalgic and less brutal than Scorsese's film, telling the simple story of a teen whose respect for his father's principles conflicts with the allure of a gangster's swaggering charm. Anchored by two excellent performances from De Niro and Palminteri, the film examines issues like family bonds and loyalty in the context of the socially turbulent '60s, when racism and xenophobia were rife--all underscored by C's fledgling romance with a black girl (Taral Hicks). De Niro has a real feel for period details, too, which gives additional lift to this absorbing character study.
Movie Review: A Heartwarming and Very Entertaining Film Summary: 5 Stars
My father suggested I see this film, to give me an insight into his own childhood in a crowded New York neighborhood. It is the tale of a young Bronx boy, torn between admiration for his hard-working, honest father in a lower-middle class Bronx neighborhood, and his hero-worship of a colorful mobster. The characters are not one-dimensional stereotypes: Robert De Niro,as the father, is overbearing in his well-meaning love for his son, and Chazz Palmintieri as the mobster is genuinely caring as boy's wrong-side-of-the-law mentor. The film spins an engrossing tale of the boy's struggle to decide between two very different ways of life. It is a very accurate reflection of the dilemma of many urban young men. A well-acted, well-crafted film.
Movie Review: Chazz is the genius behind the film Summary: 5 Stars
A couple years ago Chazz Palminteri came to my school to talk about this movie, his life, and hollywood in general. He basically does a one-man play version of this movie by himself, and that is what caught De Niro's eye. Many people could easily get confused that because De Niro has his name all over the film, that it is his work of art. It is actually about Chazz's life as a kid and has nothing to do with DeNiro. I would easily recommend this movie to anyone because it deals with so much in a few short hours.
Note: During the speech that Chazz gave, he claimed that indeed, he believed that if the girl did not reach over and open the car door for the guy than she wasn't a good catch.
Movie Review: From One Man Show to Ensemble Tour De Force Summary: 5 Stars
Adapted from Chazz Palmentieri's ground-breaking one-man Broadway show (which thankfully went back on tour this year), the film version of "A Bronx Tale" brings the 17 characters Palmentieri portrayed onstage to vivid and compassionate life. In his debut as a director, Robert DeNiro shows an actor's sense of creating by using a very light director's touch, and allowing his cast and the script (also by Palmentieri) to take center stage.
The film takes one breif incident from the author's childhood and shows how his environment, sensibilities, parental guidence and the experiences of his contemporaries frame that incident and shape his future. A must-see for all.
