Movie Reviews of 88 MinutesMovie Review: Pacino on the move... Summary: 3 Stars
The second the credits appear on screen, and because of the style of the music itself, you know this is going to be a thriller and a vehicle for Pacino. The best thing about an Al Pacino film is the fact that given the proper script, Pacino can turn just cookies, into milk and cookies; a line he actually uses early in the film. Pacino, playing a forensic psychologist with a huge hair-do and a rugged goatee, actually makes the script into a believable who-dunnit. He also manages to do something alot of actors his age have trouble with; make his younger supporting players seem to respect and admire him throughout the film. This is so because he is playing a character the same age as his with a deep sense of morality. Also, every other scene is Pacino either running, driving or protecting one of his co-stars. But Pacino grinds his oddly written character into the dirt and his gritty performance colors the bland script. The locations are well-used, and the direction is fast-paced, but do we need to see Al Pacino, racing around Seattle, trying to solve a murder as well as trying to prevent his own demise? Why not? Hey, it's Pacino, no punches pulled here. Beautiful female cast, including Leelee Sobieski, Amy Brenneman and Alicia Witt give nice support and help turn this crime flick into a first-class crime thirller. Good film made better by Pacino!
Movie Review: 3 Ticks of the Clock Summary: 3 Stars
Forensic psychologist Jack Gramm (Al Pacino) is the best at what he does. Nine years ago his testimony put the Seattle Slayer, Jon Forster (Neil McDonough), behind bars. Present day, women are being killed with the same modus operandi as Forster's. Is there a copycat killer? Was there an accomplice or was Forster innocent all along? Gramm has 88 minutes to piece together the clues or find himself in a heap of trouble.
Pulse pounding is the first phrase that comes to mind with "88 Minutes." Next would have to be edge of your seat. However, only to a certain extent. The film does have the ability to leave you wondering what the next piece of the puzzle is going to be, but at the same time it is a bit predictable. It delivers some good suspenseful moments and then other times it seemed to drag. "88 Minutes" is still a fun film. It's not one I would add to my collection, but it's worth renting. Nice to see Pacino is still acting, even if his work is decent at best.
Movie Review: Better than I was led to believe Summary: 3 Stars
When this movie first came to theaters I was surprised at the truly terrible reviews that mainstream critics gave it. But, being a big Al Pacino fan, I decided to see it when it came out on DVD. While my no means a great film, it's a suspenseful "pop corn" movie. Unrealistic but entertaining. I thought Pacino's performance was very good compared to some of his recent films. He has erased a lot of the eye-popping and other caricature mannerisms and gives a more subtle and quietly dignified performance and he is particularly moving in a scene that takes place in a car when he talks about his younger sister. But his hair and make-up people have quite a way with a teasing comb.
Movie Review: Good suspense, but very unrealistic Summary: 3 Stars
I watched this movie and was sitting on the edge of my chair till the end. For suspense, the movie can have 5 stars. What a pity that there are so many unlikely things happening in it. A forensic shrink running around with a gun in a city and nobody stops him? A taxi driver that agrees to sit on his own car's backseat and let a clearly overreacting person take the steering wheel? No way! Not for $100, not for $500!! I would rate this movie 5 stars if the situations would be more realistic.
Movie Review: If you liked Copy Cat... Watch it again! Summary: 3 Stars
I liked the old Sigourney Weaver film Copy Cat, it was tense and scary and interesting. 88 Minutes is almost the same movie with Al Pacino taking the part of Weaver. Nothing special about the film other than the thought that is expressed in the alternative ending. Not a terrible movie, but nothing to get excited about and share with your friends.
