Movie Review: Bancroft and Hopkins are marvelous! Summary: 5 Stars
When I received my copy of the DVD I was at first dismayed to realize it was not a Widescreen edition. Then I discovered that a panned-and-scanned edition is all that is available. On further thought, considering that the film is essentially Bancroft and Hopkins talking to each other through the mail, the absence of sweeping panoramas isn't a fatal flaw.
As a book lover, this film is one of my all-time favorites. The joy of reading, touching, smelling finely bound and printed texts comes palpably through the screen. If you love books you must see this film.
Movie Review: A TRUE LOVE STORY Summary: 5 Stars
This will always be one of my favorites! I have never said "raspberry" without "drawing" it out as the English do since I saw this movie. You can't review this movie . . . you simply must "live it" as you watch it. Anne Bancroft's best and Anthony Hopkin's close second to Shadowlands. An incredible book lover story! When you hold a first edition hereafter, you will treasure it as Anne Bancroft did. You will raise it to your lips and kiss it; you will smell and caress the leather . . . and, when you go to England, you will look for the store. This will be a favorite for your lifetime.
Movie Review: A Little Gem Summary: 5 Stars
"84 Charing Cross Road" is a treasure. A great script based on a true story provides a worthy vehicle for a world-class cast headed by Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins, who play a New York booklover and a British antique book dealer, respectively. The story follows the long distance relationship between the two that spans one ocean and three decades, as Bancroft and Hopkins become much more than buyer and seller. Made in the mid-1980s, the film has lost none of its poignancy or ability to delight. I highly recommend this film.
Movie Review: Great Acting, Great Story Summary: 5 Stars
Certainly a "must have" for Ann Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins fans. A wonderful job of bringing the correspondence format of the book to the screen. I was quite disappointed however to find that 1/3 of the cinematographer's efforts have been electronically clipped off each side of the picture in the DVD version. To add to the insult, the result is called "full screen." I certainly wouldn't buy a condensed version of the book and cannot understand why anyone would want an "edited for TV version of a great movie.
