Movie Reviews of 84 Charing Cross RoadMovie Review: A delight for literature lovers! Summary: 5 Stars
Where has this film been all my life?!?! I have not yet read the book from which it is based; however, it is a new favorite for the literature lovers in our family. The characters' "dialogue" (more like alternating monologues)kept our teenage daughter laughing in delight. The main characters, Helene Hanff and Frank Doel, speak their long-distance correspondence for our benefit. A truly refreshing aspect of their budding friendship is that it is considerate of the different cultures in which they live, and it is CHASTE. Wow! We get rich insights into both character's personal relationships "at home", without artificial drama. Just contentment with real life. The film tries very hard to give us visual cues to the place and times (through the decades), and it's beautiful!
Movie Review: For book lovers Summary: 5 Stars
I adore this film. I discovered Helen Hanff's books only after I had seen this film. Both are treasures. Hanff's story tells of her long distance association with a London book shop that specializes in finding rare volumes at a reasonable price. Her correspondence with the shop's manager is the basis of the story. This is a love story - of sorts. These people all love books - not mass market knock-offs, but books rich in history and poetry. The trans-Atlantic relationship is brought off beautifully. Bancroft and Hopkins shine in their roles. The supporting characters (including Mercedes Ruehl and Judi Dench) are wonderfully understated. The screenplay by Hugh Whitemore captures the very essence of Hanff's memoir. If you adore books and fine films, do not miss this.
Movie Review: A real gem. Summary: 5 Stars
This film is a real gem! Unlike most films, this one sticks very closely to the facts and ambiance of the book (with the same name) on which it is based, and the actors and actresses for all roles were very well-chosen. It is a romance about people, and about old books and second-hand book-shops. It will make you love the feel and smell of well-bound old books, as well as their contents. It will make you appreciate margin notes, the names of previous owners and the significance of books falling open at pages that have been loved and much looked at. It is a film about warm, kind and thoughtful people that will leave you feeling inspired, uplifted and happy. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Movie Review: NO SEX, NO VIOLENCE YET STILL COMPELLING & DRAMATIC Summary: 5 Stars
This is a deeply touching movie about a long-term frienship between booklovers stunningly enacted by the gifted Anne Bancroft and the amazingly young and handsome Anthony Hopkins. Anne Bancroft can really make an audience appreciate the writer's craft and how beautiful and spiritual poetic words are to her or him.
There is not one sex scene; not one scene involving nudity. There are no scenes of violence, intentional or arbitrary. It's a booklover's Platonic dream and romance.
That two people can grippingly hold an audience's attention while (only) discussing books makes this movie endearing and special and rare.
Movie Review: It's all in the details... Summary: 5 Stars
I loved the film, love Bancroft and Sir Anthony and Dame Judi, love what the reviewers have said about this marvelous little film. But I will add that if you love the time period (the setting begins in 1949), you will appreciate that set after set is tirelessly and lovingly dressed with the details of the late '40's through the '50's to the '60's. The costuming alone could be praised, and I generally don't focus on fashion in films. Backgrounds, even if they appear briefly, were carefully created to transport us back in time, just as we are transported into the separate worlds and lives of these two correspondents. Brilliantly done.
