Movie Reviews of 84 Charing Cross RoadMovie Review: A very touching movie, a song to the friendship and still more! Summary: 5 Stars
In the great brittish tradition of similar items as A brief encounter or The Browning version, we find this treasure in the middle of the eighties.
Only the overwhelming presence of two giants actors as Mrs. Bancroft and Sir Hopkins could this work was a winner.
The film presents multiple challenges that only two legendary actors as them were capable to play and even go far beyond the script.
The script talks about the fraternity and the reciprocal admiration that these two long distance friends feel, their letters are a powerful inspiration motive to reveal much more issues than a simple intelectual exchange of wisdom and points of view.
The hidden feelings of love are suggested with elegance and nuance, a wonderful sense of rapture without affection, in that sense this relationship reminds me to Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms.
Watch this DVD , because this film is now part of the romantic cult eighties movies.
A winner.
Movie Review: Wonderful acting, wonderful movie! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great heart-warming film powered by two terrific actors. While this is a wonderful film regardless, if you are a book lover (as I am) this is even more of a treat. The basic story is about a New York woman who, irritated with the lack of quality books in her area, seeks out a bookseller in London to provide what she is looking for. While her personality and the personality of the bookseller are about as opposite as you can get, they become long distance friends.
Hopkins and Bancroft are both very good, and this truly is a feel good movie. While the premise may seem a bit boring, if you like movies that study human nature instead of just providing excitement and action, this is for you. You really start to get into the characters to the point that you feel the anticipation of meeting them yourself. To me, that is the definition of a well-done movie and good acting.
Get yourself a bowl of popcorn for this one!
Movie Review: a charming story of friendship and the love of books Summary: 5 Stars
Helene Hanff's 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD is one of the few films I have watched many, many times and have never tired of its wonderful story, great acting and inspiring picture of a life-long friendship.Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins are a perfect match for this timeless story that spans the literal breadth of the Atlantic Ocean and some 20 years in time. The supporting cast including the always-engaging Judy Dench, round out a superbly-written screenplay. This film will make you laugh, and cry and sometimes both at the same time. It resonates so much with not only the joy of finding a great book, but also with the connections books bring to our daily lives, and those friendships that arise and/or continue over the lively discussions of a wonderful book you have shared with someone. A wonderful movie to share with a fellow book lover, or just a good friend!
Movie Review: About People Summary: 5 Stars
This is a charming account of a long distance relationship built up over a number of years generated by a love of books. I love books and movies about people who are 4 dimensional, not just characters. The actors are also favorites of mine. Anne Bancroft, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and Dame Judi Dench as well as the supporting cast make the characters very real and the viewer cares about them. I wonder how many of us when we're involved in conducting some kind of business through the mail, over the phone or the Internet think about the person at the other end of the line or connection. That person may have a wife/husband, children, may be caring for elderly parents or suffering from some chronic disability. They, too, are human beings deserving of respect and concern. They are not just voices or dictators of a piece of mail.
Movie Review: A booklover's delight Summary: 5 Stars
A charming little picture about a woman booklover in NYC (Anne Bancroft) who develops a 20-year correspondence with the head of the bookshop in London at the address given in the movie's title (Anthony Hopkins). She is quirky, particular, and opinionated, but also thoughtful--she sends the shop workers food which is greatly appreciated because of the post-war shortages. The letters are the movie: Bancroft spends much of the time typing them and reading them aloud to us. Thus time and the story, meagre though it is, unfold. Bancroft and Hopkins never meet, but they obviously have developed strong feelings for each other. Finally, after 20 years Bancroft, who is now a writer, has saved enough money to come to London, but when she arrives Hopkins has died. A very low key, literate movie; one for booklovers everywhere.
