I give 'em all 5 stars, jest 'cause I don't care. That outta the way, 4 For Texas is the low energy entry into the Sinatra-Martin canon. It's true what everyone says, 4 For Texas starts out swell, thanks initially to the stuntmen and the inhumane treatment of horses that was standard for the day, then sorta fizzles. Oh, the next scene is fine, too, jest Frank and Dean, all cowboyed out, doing the rivalry schtick they do so well. Those boys got great screen presence, no doubt. Then, what happen, things go a little off. Maybe it's director Robert Aldrich's problem, he finished What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? and started this one before resting a little. Cinematographer Ernest Laszlo deserves a fair portion of the blame, what's with all the pointless gimmicky camera angles, up, down, anywhere but where the action is. I'll incriminate Victor Buono for shure, I jest never thought he was either humorous or villianous. Then there's Anita Ekberg, she's so stiff you'd think Sinatra was making love to a prop. OK, now, here's the good news. Even though Sinatra falls asleep after he gets his bath (20 minutes into the film), Martin keeps working. His brandy scene with Ursula Andress provides the expected magic. Give her half the credit. And her negligee! <Faint> Wait jesta minute! Give some of the credit to Nelson Riddle, especially his music under the brandy scene. Great playboy atmosphere. So now we got 3 swell scenes, and ... and ... things ain't so hot when Sinatra and Martin aren't onscreen. Charles Bronson is a terrific badguy, but too dark for this particular film. Casting him with Buono was jest bad fortune. The riverboat interior looks beautiful but the climatic fight is jest not exciting (despite Riddle trumpet blasts for each of Frank and Dean's punches). Again, the cinematographer works against the action. Or maybe it was jest all that drinking before noon. I mean, when the 3 Stooges hijack your movie in a 3 minute cameo (OK, now it's up to 4 swell scenes), you know the cast has been hitting the sauce a little too early in the day.
