Movie Review: LOOKIN DOWN THE BARREL .38 SPECIAL

What type of venue could be any better to catch a .38 Special concert than a biker rally? Thanks to Sony/BMG Music Entertainment for this (2007) DVD release of the 1999 live concert from the Buffalo Chip Campgrounds in Sturgis SD. The Southern Boys of rock were in fine form for their 1999 gig in Sturgis and they definitely rocked to an enthusiastic crowd. This concert DVD captures the band performing 10 songs from the show in front of several thousand revved up and raucous Harley faithful at the annual biker festival. The video transfer of this concert is great as the performance was captured by 10 different cameras to give us the best live show possible. My only complaint is that the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio is a little muddled and weak at times throughout the show. The PCM Stereo mix sounds much fuller and clearer than the 5.1, so it's a nice option to have.
Do yourself a favor and Pour some Jack Daniels or Grab a cold one and rev up your engine as .38 Special rumbles through some of their biggest hits like "Rockin' into the Night," "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys," "Hold on Loosely," "Fantasy Girl", "Caught up in You" and others. The band played with great precision and their performance was energetic to say the least. Don Barnes vocal range is still amazing and Donnie Van Zant is still a showman on stage. After all these years the music is still great and this 1999 concert proves that "The Good Old Southern Boys of Rock" still know how to lay it down.
