Movie Review: 311 Rule the Realm.
Summary: 4 Stars
The second biggest event held in New Orleans (after Mardis Gras, of course) would have to be 311's biennial celebration taking place on March 11th. Officially dubbed "311 Day" by the mayor, the concert/festival/marathon features the band playing an abnormally large set-list and is as much of a celebration of the band's longevity as it is a tribute to the fans, who are often treated to rarely played -- if ever -- tracks in addition to an assembly of some of the band's finest material on tap.
Thankfully, the band had the foresight to film "311 Day" in 2004 and release it on DVD. Culled from a concert that broke a record for the band as the longest in its history, the DVD features over four hours (!) of concert footage, spread out over 64 -- count 'em, sixty four -- songs. All of the band's biggest hits spanning from their 1993 debut, Music, to their 2003 album, Evolver (at that point, their most recent album, therefore featured the most prominently) appear, alongside a bevy of b-sides, rarities and covers ranging from The Clash to Led Zeppelin to The Cure. Leaving virtually no stone unturned, this is essentially a dream for the 311 faithful, whether they have been to a 311 show or not.
Granted, there are a few issues that drag down the festivities. First off, there are no special features to speak of, unless you count the fifteen minutes or so of behind the scenes and fan footage that open and close the show. Also, the picture quality is rather poor when compared to the average music DVD. While one could chalk this issue up to compression (how else were they supposed to cram so much onto just two discs?) it doesn't help that it's presented in what is essentially "fake" widescreen. If you own an HDTV, you'll be disappointed to find those bars are part of the image itself, therefore looking ridiculous in true widescreen. This is an issue that can be solved by some fidgeting with the zoom feature on your TV or DVD player, but is an issue nevertheless.
Even still, though, the DVD more than gives you bang for your buck. The band is in top form, full of energy and obviously more at home on a stage than in a recording studio. Fact of the matter is, 311 are and always will be a live act first and foremost. If you haven't yet seen the band in the flesh, this DVD comes as close to the real thing as possible. Combine that with an insane setlist and enough songs to take up a sizeable chunk of your day, and you just can't go wrong with this set.
