Movie Reviews of 30 Rock: Season OneMovie Review: Probably too smart to last Summary: 5 Stars
Some people call 30 Rock the heir apparent to Arrested Development and in some ways they're right. 30 Rock is literate, clever and irreverent all at once and Will Arnett, GOB on Arrested Development, has shown up in a number of episodes.
The frenetic pace of Arrested Development is missing, but that doesn't detract from the show, which has enough merit to stand on its own. The biggest of those merits is the skill of the writers who often employ literary tricks to elevate the show beyond merely what's on the screen (in one episode Tina Fey falls for her cousin and the natural balance of the universe is upset as Jack Donaghy becomes Kenneth's employee, Jenna becomes the head instead of the hair, air gets served as food, etc). This sort of thing happens in almost every episode and repeat viewing is often rewarded.
The other biggest reason to tune in is Alec Baldwin who hasn't been this much fun since Glenngary Glenn Ross and the rest of the cast who behave as though this is the best job they ever had.
I hope NBC gives 30 Rock more support than FOX gave Arrested Development and I hope the AD crowd seeks out 30 Rock and extends it its patronage.
Movie Review: Bound to be a Classic - Tina Fey Rocks "30 Rock" Summary: 5 Stars
I stumbled on "30 Rock" quite by accident one Thursday night when there was nothing much to watch. I don't know why I wasn't attracted to it when it first came out ... but I can only guess some sort of other distraction.
"30 Rock" has grown to become my FAVORITE comedy series of all time. I don't say that lightly either. I love Tina Fey and with her Sarah Palin imitations she gained new notoriety and I think more and more people began to give "30 Rock" a try.
One try (the 3rd season) and I was ABSOLUTELY hooked. I received seasons 1 and 2 for Christmas and have just eaten them up over and over. Any time I need to pull myself out of the dumps, I put on some "30 Rock" and enjoy several episodes at a time. I love Kenneth and Tracey ... aww heck, I love them all.
I am a late bloomer for this show but a definite junkie., I, too, am startled to discover how many people really don't know the show or have not watched it?? Like me I guess. One or two episodes and you are hooked.
It's the best. :)
Movie Review: Best comedy on TV...including the office! Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, I love the Office. But things are starting to get a bit repetitive. Michael's a loveable idiot who means well, yada yada...
Meanwhile, over on 30 Rock, Alec Baldwin is displaying the comic brilliance that Steve Carrell flaunted in season 2 of the office. I mean, I can't look at Alec without laughing. I always new he had it in him, based on prior SNL work and some movies, but the combination of writing and the role he's playing...it's just unbelievable and he should get an emmy for sure.
Tina is also great, of course, big fan there.
Tracy Morgan...who knew he could be funny? He was a real let down on SNL...I just assumed he had some dirt on Lorne. But on this show he shines. The role is perfect for him. And again the writing is great.
The rest of the ensemble does a great job as well. This show, along with the office, are two of the funniest shows to be on tv in years. Highly recommended to anybody that likes to laugh.
Movie Review: A stellar first season for a brilliant new comedy show Summary: 5 Stars
Kudos to Tina Fey for the clever plots, sympathetic characters and the best dialogue since Frasier. Witty, snappy and edgy, several stories unfold over the course of the season as we are introduced to the new characters, their fears, their dreams and their own unique amalgam of social pathologies.
Tina Fey is a terminally insecure producer who alternates between being trampled and riding roughshod over her staff. Alec Baldwin is her new boss, with more than a little Alex P. Keaton in him, a personality that owns each scene and the best lines on the show (which is saying quite a bit). Jane Krakowski has ample opportunity to showcase her talents, as do Tracy Morgan and the rest of the strong cast. Even the guest stars (like Rip Torn, Isabella Rosselini and Elain Stritch) add color and depth to the story arcs and, of course, to the laughs.
A most memorable first season that set the bar very high for the second.
Movie Review: My favorite show on television right now Summary: 5 Stars
For those of us who mourn the passing of Arrested Development, 30 Rock is a more than adequate replacement. Not only is Tina Faye hilarious, but Alec Baldwin and Tracey Morgan are show-stealers. Just like Arrested Development used to do, my roommates and I walk away from each new episode of 30 Rock with a new catchphrase or quote, be it "Thats 2 words!" or "Stop eating people's old french fries pigeon, have some self respect! Don't you know you can fly?" or the "Werewolf Bar Mitzvah" music video or "blerg". Granted, all of these quotes are from Season 2, but Season 1 is just as good and we have adopted so many from the show so far its hard to remember all of them. I also think that its necessary to watch before delving into Season 2 in order to fully understand the long-running jokes and various characters.
Overall: a great reason not to give up on TV altogether after Arrested Development was cancelled.
