Movie Reviews of 30 Rock: Season OneMovie Review: 30 Rock--Brilliant, But Needs Some Tweaking Summary: 5 Stars
I love 30 Rock, but I can't help wondering how its going over with the general public. The Dick Van Dyke show had a similar premise (the life of a comedy writer and his oddball coworkers), but at the end of the day, Rich Petrie always went home to New Rochelle, his wife Laura and friends Jerry and Millie who acted as foil to his unconventional New York TV life. They also, in a way, were representative of the audience--the ordinary Americans outside of Manhattan for whom a job like Petrie's was inconceivable. Who stands for the audience in 30 Rock? The schlubby people that Kenneth the page leads around on the NBC tours who are portrayed as being dowdy and not very bright? LIke Liz says, "This isn't HBO, this is TV"--so it's not a great idea to insult the ordinary viewers (and then expect them to watch the show). 30 Rock needs some engaging non show-biz characters that the audience can identify with. In the show, Liz lives on Riverside Drive--there's nothing intrinsically funny about that and it makes her look rich. Wouldn't a comedy writer in her position be priced out of Manhattan? Maybe Liz needs to move to Queens or Brooklyn where she can have some regular people as neighbors whose lifestyle can provide a contrast to hers. In any case, I hope this show stays on the air--it's intelligent, well-written and even the music is witty.
Movie Review: Tina Fey is a Genius Summary: 5 Stars
This is the funniest sitcom on television right now, and it is the creation of one of the greater female minds in the industry. Not only is Tina Fey an incredible writer, but she is an insanely funny actress too. She is beautiful but plays nerdy so well that she seems just like one of us normal folk. My favorite scene of the first season is the leather pumpkin exchange between Liz Lemon (Fey) and her potential love interest. It is a very short moment about halfway through the season, but it is one of those instances where there are multiple layers of totally relatable comedy. I couldn't stop laughing because I've been in leather pumpkin situations a number of times myself.
Although Tina Fey is so awesome that she could easily do an entire show of just her doing jokes by herself week after week (and I'd still be perfectly content), there are also hilarious performances by Jane Krakowski, Alec Baldwin (still sexy), and Tracy Morgan.
Frankly, I don't know why more people don't watch this show. It's unfortunate when I go into work after having watched another fantastic episode, and no one has seen it. Then I have the awkward task of trying to describe a scene that was so funny I almost peed my pants, but of course I can't do it right, no one thinks I'm funny, and it's the leather pumpkin fiasco all over again.
Movie Review: Intelligent Humor Summary: 5 Stars
Maybe it is my soft-spot for Tina Fey or maybe I'm just one of the wierd ones but I..love..this..shew! For once someone is placing intelligent humor before us, i.e. humor that makes us think about what we are laughing, instead of the T.G.I.F. laugh track crap that we have been subjected to for decades. "30 Rock" has that sarcastic spark of life that requires you to be engaged with the show rather than be an innocent bystander
I love that it isn't blatently obvious humor and that there are TONS of undercurrents and surprises that you can miss if you are not paying attention. That is what makes you want to watch AGAIN, all of that "little stuff". Yet it remains just over-the-top enough to be blatently funny in certain areas especially anytime that Tracy Morgan shows up.
"30 Rock" is a show that isn't afraid to make fun of itself, "the man" and the process that is television making. For all of us that have worked in this field at one time or another, it is a mockingly accurate depiction of what we have all gone through. In keeping with SNL tradition, "30 Rock" makes us laugh at ourselves and sometimes wince at what we just saw.
This is one of my favoritest "must see television" shows and this will be one of those shows that make it to a coveted spot on my DVD shelf.
Movie Review: The Best Sitcom since "Seinfeld" Summary: 5 Stars
People may not remember that Seinfeld was a ratings loser the first 2 years of its run. And looking back, those first two years weren't that great. But this show is hilarious right from the start!
It's smart, witty, and just downright genius at times. But that may be the problem. It doesn't have a laugh track to tell people when a joke is. So many of the funnier jokes gets missed by not so savvy viewers...And people in general don't like smart, they like stupid (see King of Queens). This show isn't even in that league. If it is cancelled I'll be very sad. It's the best thing on TV. It's made me look foreward to thursday nights again.
Every episode is fantastic. Alec Baldwin is fantastic every week. And the supporting cast is perfect. Kenneth, TwoFor. Frank just needs to come up with something new on his hats, because that is the only joke that is worn out.
But besides that, every episode is great. My personal favorite is "Tracy does Conan". When Conan doesn't want Tracy on his show because last time he tried to stab him. Alec Baldwin's character tells him that if he doesn't let him on, he'll be doing a Christmas special from Bahgdad every year until the war is over! ....instant classic.
Movie Review: My favorite new show of the 2006-2007 season Summary: 5 Stars
What do the Hair and the headpiece have in common with "The Ruhhr Juhhrr"? They're all part of the wacky corporate world of "30 Rock," Tina Fey's smart and giddy comedy about the inside workings of NBC. Fey, the former head writer of "Saturday Night Live" and writer-actor of "Mean Girls," created "30 Rock" as--imagine!--a backstage look at the creation of a network-TV sketch-comedy show. Fey plays a thinly disguised version of herself named Liz Lemon (ha!), the perpetually beleaguered head writer of "The Girlie Show," starring her friend (Jane Krakowski). Enter Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin), the corporate stuffed shirt from GE who demands that action star Tracy Morgan (Tracy Jordan) be added to the show to improve the ratings. (Jack also happens to be associated with any number of famous women such as Beyonce and "Condi," and he says at one point, "God, it's like dating Katie Couric all over again.") Toss in a variety of other oddball characters including Kenneth the Page (played by Jack McBrayer) and Dr. Spa-CHEH-men and a batch of one-liners that are good for 10 minutes of water-cooler banter the next morning, and it all adds up to a show that I love so much I want to take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant!
