Movie Reviews of 30 Days of Night

Movie Review: Blood and Oil in the Snow...
Summary: 5 Stars

Lets start by saying, I have never read the graphic novel so have no reference point from which to base my review, I can only say what I think to the film as it stands.

I thought Josh Hartnett was excellent in the lead role and developed a character both warm and isolated in the same breath.

The film itself gave a new tilt on the whole vampire genre, moving away from the romantic creatures of Anne Rice and portraying them as blood thirsty pack hunting killing machines who go on a feeding frenzy upon the citizens of Barrow, Alaska during a month long period of darkness.

I loved the film and felt that it was paced just nicely throughout, not too much character growth, making it easier to see them quickly get torn apart in the blood bath.

the vampires were phenominal in their design, having viewed the making of extras and then seeing the finished product they all displayed an inhuman quality that took some excellent casting.

All in all if you love the vampire flicks, you really need to have this in your collection. outstanding piece of work.

Movie Review: Unique, Vicious, Interesting
Summary: 5 Stars

I enjoyed this film from beginning to end and have watched it many times although normally I have zero interest in vampires as they are clownish and not frightening in the least.

What made this film a 5 is the plot's uniqueness in how vampires are portrayed.

Unique in that who would have ever thought to bring vampires to Alaska where it stays dark for 30 days. No coffins to be seen (so mundane) and they do not speak English much. These vampires have no interest in communicating with humans. There is also none of that ridiculous male vampire to female woman sexual undertone in this film.

These vampires are extremely vicious, quick, cruel, intelligent and secretive. Humans are food-period.

The people of Barrow reacted the way any population would-with bravery and insight. They were not going to go down without a fight.

The ending was also amazingly unique because no one had ever thought to beat vampires at their own game.

Movie Review: Best horror of 2007? It just might be...
Summary: 5 Stars

In movie land where remakes seem to be the latest fad (don't get me wrong, I enjoy the occassional remake) 30 Days of Night proves to be a great breath of fresh air.

In some of my other reviews I have made it known that I am not a vampire fan but this movie might have just changed that.

In remote Alaska, closed of for 30 days of darkness lies a perfect place for a vampire to play and feast. The cinema photography was excellent and you can't help but feel cold watching the movie. A pile of cell phones, slaugherted dogs and an enemy that seems impossible to kill makes for a thrilling ride. The sneakiness of the vampires and the intensity of the survivors hiding out is the best!

Not once did I get bored with this movie. I was a little concerned about Josh Hartnett carrying the lead role but much to my relief that proved to be a false alarm.

If you want a good movie with some certian chills you must check out 30 Days of Night.

Movie Review: These Vampires would laugh at Dracula... then rip off his head!
Summary: 5 Stars

30 Days of Night is a terrifying vision. I went to see it on Halloween night and the theater was packed to the gills with noisy, college types. I thought: "Oh, well, this will be one of those movies where everyone's talking and overreacting." Then the movie started and...silence... for two hours I felt as if I were the only person in the theater. Isolated with the people of Barrow.

If vampires existed this is what they'd be like, in my opinion. Totally vicious. Predatory. Merciless. Add to this the most brilliant soundtrack from hell and you've got a real horror movie. The best I've seen in years. These vampires would giggle at the likes of Lestat or Dracula and then tear them to shreds. No silly, romanticized vampires here, looking for love in all the wrong places.

No, the movie's not perfect. How many movies are? But if you're looking for a unique, chilling cinematic experience you need look no further than 30 Days of Night.

Movie Review: This may be the best vampire movie ever
Summary: 5 Stars

As other reviewers note, there are obvious problems re: the way the sun sets, and never mind that nobody comes to check after a town is totally off the communications grid for several weeks (not even Exxon?). But, really, if you can accept the idea of vampires then you should not be griping about less-than-persuasive geophysics and the film's rejection of modern communications practices.

Same goes for the "this is not a vampire film...it's a zombie film" line; this type of comment sounds like horror film classism: yeah, we all know vampires dress well, bathe after every meal...and listen to cool music. They're the classy monsters; zombies are so, like, lower-middle class.

This is an amazingly rich film, with complex and reinforced themes; it also dares to depict things that most films shy away from. I had very low expectations of 30 Days, and I was bowled over by this movie.
