Movie Reviews of 25th HourMovie Review: A Masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
Well I'm coming late to the party since this film came out six years ago, but better late than never. Just caught this movie for the first time on cable tv and boy am I happy I decided to watch it. This was a "oh heck, let's give this movie a shot since nothing else is on" type of movie. What a terrible loss it would have been not to see it.
I don't use the term "masterpiece" loosely. As a matter of fact I can't remember the last movie I referred to a movie as a "masterpiece." If any film deserves that title it's 25th hour. Edward Norton has to be one of the best actors of our time. The rest of the cast is sensational as well. What a brutally honest, moving tribute to the resilience of New York City and the resilience of the human spirit to endure in the face of hardship and tragedy. It's also about how the choices we make in life affect so many people around us. This film reminds me very much of Before The Devil Knows Your Dead, an amazing film as well that deals with the choices life presents us and the consequence of those choices. Not coincidentally Philip Seymour Hoffman stars in that film as well along with Ethan Hawk. All tremendous actors in their own right.
Anyway, I could go on, but I've said what I needed to. For plot reviews, well you can get that from the other Amazon reviewers or from the Amazon synopsis. I just felt it would be criminal to see a film like 25th hour and not let a potential Amazon customer know how I feel about it. If you value incredible acting, fantastic writing, a well developed storyline, and extremely thought provoking messages in your movies, then by all means buy this movie. You'll get all of that and then some.
Movie Review: NYC Ghosts & Flowers Summary: 5 Stars
This is a tremendous movie. It was made by men and women and actors who deeply felt a bond with the weight of the emotions in the script, and Spike Lee's setting of the narrative in deeply shaken post-9/11 New York only adds to the sense of "gravitas."Seeing this film in the cinema was an engrossing experience. Edward Norton's sense of self-rage - and, inevitably, self-pity and sorrow - are palpable in every scene; his character's early diatribe against everyone and everything in Manhattan is one of the film's most poignant moments. In a movie about the repercussions and results of what one does or does not do over the course of one's life, each of the characters appears to be flailing and falling, desperate. I am not a New Yorker, so I cannot speak as one. But I was there in the city shortly after that horrible day in 2001, when I lost a family member in the collapse. New York was a city of funerals for days and weeks to come. The night I write this, I watched - completely by chance - two movies that now serve as prologue and epilogue to that famous structure. The Robert Redford heist caper, THE HOT ROCK (1972), features a helicopter scene where the heroes fly by a still-under-construction World Trade Center. Now, there's 25th HOUR (2003), that shows, for all time, the ruins and scars of what once had been. Obviously, this is not a movie review, but a personal remembrance. But I will say that actors Norton, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rosario Dawson and Brian Cox are all excellent, with special mention going to the incredible Barry Pepper in a superb supporting performance. It's not a popcorn picture by any means, but it's one that I'm proud to have in my collection.
Movie Review: 25-th hour Summary: 5 Stars
When the movie first started I was very emotional to see the two lights replacing the Twin Towers - automatically I was sent back to 9/11's tragedy. I had to cry........ I thought I've seen the helpless victims again waving white clothes to indicate to helpless viewers that Help is needed. Gosh..... We will remember 9/11 but its difficult to go back there. It's just too sad. Anyways, the movie didn't turn up to be what I've expected. I got so confused and very bored by unneccesary long scenes. What I liked the most about the movie was when Monty had the dialogue with himself in front of the mirror. It's true there were FU's but there is a powerful message in those swearings I believe. "When in Rome do as Romans do (and I'll add this myself) and love Romans too". In 25-th hour Romans are Americans! and...(un)fortunetaly Monty's accusations were right!!! And if people come up with thoughts that "Monty is a racist" then they should think again "Who is a racist?!?" Monty or themselves! because - IF you're gonna chose U.S.A. as your country then you must love, work and protect U.S.A's interests by all means. If you're only after U.S. dollars then go to your own country as there'll be more ways you can make them. Yeah, simple as that. Appreciation, that's what is needed from people Monty is mad at. So appreciate U.S.A., learn English, think American and behave CIVILISED so then you can avoid getting offended in movies such as 25-th hour. After all 25-th hour is a long movie and rather "boring" but it's worth watching it.
Movie Review: Film techniques add interest and edginess to this fine story Summary: 5 Stars
This Spike Lee film is a hard-edged story of a convicted drug dealer on the last day before he has to serve a 7-year prison sentence. Edward Norton stars in this role and brings all his excellent acting talents to the task of taking a long last look at the New York City he loves as well as the important people in his life. There's his girlfriend, played by Rosario Dawson, who just might be the person who betrayed him to the cops. There's his father, played by Brian Cox, who blames himself for his son going astray. There are his two best friends, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Barry Pepper, who know that their friend will never be the same again. Add a couple of Russian gangsters to this mix, as well as a precocious teenager, played by Anna Paquin, whose seductiveness tempts Philip Seymour Hoffman into making an unwise decision, and the scene is set for an intriguing, fast-paced film. I liked the theme, which was about being responsible for the consequences of your actions, and I liked Spike Lee's interpretation of it. I especially liked some of his film techniques. Sometimes the colors are altered to show the main characters bathed in blue. And, during the sequences that get inside Norton's mind, the colors are glaring neon. This adds to the interest and the edginess of the film. The story is easy to relate to. The characters are real. The acting is the finest that the film industry has to offer. And there's a director who has his own personal style of bringing it all to life. You can't go wrong with that combination. Recommended.
Movie Review: "...THE BEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE." Summary: 5 Stars
25TH HOUR is the story of Montgomery Brogan (Norton)and his last night of freedom before being hauled off to Otisville Prison for seven years on account of drugs. A dedicated person with everything going for him, whose ambition was misguided when he turned to dealing drugs in need of money. He is touched by the DEA when they find hidden drugs in his apartment. It all boils down to his last day on the outside, to tighten up loose ends with his father(Cox), his childhood friends(Pepper and Hoffman), his loyal Dog, Doyle and his girlfriend, Naturelle(Dawson), whom he suspects of tipping off the authorities. He has one day to make peace and realize where he went wrong in his life and what has led to this point. This movie is perfectly cast as well as the excellent direction from Spike Lee. This movie, which is based on a novel, proposed a great concept. It causes you to consciously think of the decisions you have made in your life and what you would do if you had one day to change everything. The film is also able to create that feeling of dread that Monty feels, fearing what may happen to him in jail, and the loss of his friends and family. What would happen if you had 24 hours to live freely, with prison waiting for you? What are the things that go through the mind of a person in that situation? This film is well-written and the acting is powerful. The atmosphere that is created causes you to feel a great range of emotion that the characters experience as well. 25TH HOUR is a great film that is well worthy of the critical acclaim it has recieved.
