Movie Reviews of 24: Season Four

Movie Review: A great show for anyone
Summary: 5 Stars

How I started watching 24 is a strange story. In its first 3 seasons, I always knew of it, but never watched it. After watching a few (probably 3) minutes of the first season, I wasn't impressed and for no reason decided never to watch the show. It's pretty obvious that I never gave it a chance (and somehow people do this all the time). So years later when Season 4 premiered, I happened to be in my room on my computer with the TV on fox (only because Seinfeld just went off). I can honestly say the only reason I didn't change the channel, or simply turn the TV off was because I couldn't bear the 10 ft walk without my remote. As the show progressed, I found my self more and more engrossed till the point where I couldn't walk away for the next two hours. As the show ended, I was shocked to find how entertaining it was. Like most people, the most thrilling show I had seen till then was Law & Order (no offense). I soon went to Amazon to find that the first season was available for 25$ and I quickly purchased it. Thinking back, that was most definitely the best investment I've ever made in a DVD. 25$ for 18+ hrs of sheer entertainment, there's no doubt. I was able to buy and watch the first 3 seasons in less than two weeks, sad to some but fun for me.

Compared to the first 3 seasons, I'm happy to see that season 4 is still able to retain some originality. I don't think I will say this is the best season (one reason being its a bit far-fetched, even in comparison to the earlier seasons) but still easily one of the best TV shows of all time.

Movie Review: It's just the best thing on TV still
Summary: 5 Stars

Anyone who thought that a 4th series was a stretch too far for 24 were once again wrong, it just keeps going and doesn't lose any quality through each series. As i stated in my review of the 3rd series it is no longer an original format but it never ceases to surprise me with it's amazing plot twists, this series perhaps more than any other.

First of all there are a number of new characters in the 4th series and a host of absentees from the previous season (some do return later on). However it was probably time to clear out a few of the weaker characters such as Kim Bauer who hadn't really been important in the last two series. Of the new characters the most significant is Audrey Raines, daughter of the Secretary of Defence (also prominent) and also Jack's new love interest. Her husband how she is seperated from later appears to fight for her affections with Jack, and he is involved in one of the most amazing plot lines in all of the series. Without giving too much away, Jack has to make a life or death decision, with dire consequences, this plot line probably surprised me more than any other in all 4 series, that is until the ending!

The ending is truly amazing, the best of all the series, I wont give it away but you'll never guess it, though it once again all makes sense in the end. It will be very interesting to see how Jack is written into the 5th series. Once again though, no quality has been lost since the last series, and buying this DVD is money well spent, can't wait for the return of the series in January over in England.

Movie Review: Please do not hand out spoilers!
Summary: 5 Stars

To the writer of the first review, I must say you are very accurate in your writing. However, I don't think it is fair to include so many spoilers. If I had read this review prior to having seen the show, it would have removed much of the suspense and therefore pretty much ruined the show for me. So please at least put a spoiler warning at the beginning of your review. After all, this IS a site where people go looking for reviews before they buy something, so try not to give away all of the plot twists before they even watch the first episode. hint: characters! I am not trying to be mean-spirited, I just think that you were a little overzealous, considering many things that you mentioned do not occur until late in the series. Now that that is said and done, I must admit that the only season that trumps this one, if any, is season 1. Season 2 was excellent, and the character development that took place blew me away. Season 3 on the other hand, while it was riveting as far as the suspense was concerned, it seemed far too much like a militaristic soap opera, with all of the fighting between people who were supposed to be fighting for a cause. Season 1 was great, and the only gripe I had was the whole thing with Kim getting involved with the terrorists. Season 4 on the other hand, is non-stop action, full of violent plot twists, and literally keeps you on the edge of your seat. So I definitely recommend that you get your grubby little paws on a copy of this once it is released. You won't regret it at all.

Movie Review: Gets better and better
Summary: 5 Stars

SPOILERS AHEAD: I thought this season started out very lamely with some implausible situations and uninteresting characters (Erin Driscoll and her daughter being the most annoying characters in the history of the show and Secretary Heller being the dumbest; William Devane was hilariously stupid--I laughed my head off everytime he spewed one useless comment after another), but it got so good that by the end I was virtually on the edge of my seat. Things started to look better when Tony Almeida suddenly showed up and the show went into high gear and got even better when Michelle Dessler (those two have great chemistry together; you could feel their love), Mike Novak and President Palmer turned up. My favorite scenes in the season were when Jack held up the gas station store, Mrs. Araz poisoned Debbie, when that couple camping in the desert came across the "football", when Jack forces the doctors to save a witness' life and let Paul Raines die, and that absolutely riveting scene where that first deadly female assassin impersonates an FBI agent. Also, I don't watch much TV, but this is the first time I ever heard Chinese nationals speaking official Mandarin Chinese rather than Cantonese. I thought that was so cool, and also that they didn't use any of those stock Asian American actors you usually always see on other shows and movies. My only disappointment with this season is that there was no scandalous side story to make things interesting; bring back Sherry Palmer!

Movie Review: Too Bad There are only 5 stars
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an astonishing accomplishment. Great entertainment and an enormously creative work. Talking about the plot or saying it's suspense won't do it justice.

Like many of the other readers, I bought Season 1 got hooked, and have now watched the 4 seasons in little more than a month and am now ready for season 5. Without commericals and the ability to move from week to week without waiting, the Season is incredibly intense and addictive. I read much more than watch tv --but this is like great literature. Here's why --
1] the main character, Jack Bauer, is multi dimensional and complex; yes, he's an action hero --resourceful and ruthless, but he has a human side which is embedded in his character that makes you think about him as a person not just a stick figure;
2] the plotting is extremely intricate; it is amazing how well conceived each season is and how what happened first the prior week and then the prior year all ties together;
3] the acting is first rate --the situations at times stretch credulity but the quality of the acting makes the plot twists as believable as possible;
4] the level of suspense is unrelenting and unpredictable.
--all in all watching 24 is by analogy what it must have been like to read Dickens' when his novels were first published as periodic installments. And I think this series will endure though I am not predicting it will be watched as broadly as Dickens is read!
