Movie Reviews of 24: Season Four

Movie Review: Another Bad Day for Jack Bauer, but Awesome to Watch!!
Summary: 5 Stars

24 hours. 24 episodes makes for a perfect season length in this series. I have watched all four seasons so far and this season raised the bar! For a quick recap, Day 3 actually had a happy (compared to the others) ending. Jack Bauer and his protege, Chase Edmunds were able to save L.A. and the rest of the U.S. from an onslaught of biochemical attacks. CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit) director Tony Almeida was arrested for botching a mission so he could save his wife Michelle Dessler.
6 months later, new CTU director Erin Driskal forces Jack Bauer out of CTU because of his past addiction to herione which he aquired between seasons 2 and 3.
When day 4 begins we learn that Jack has found a new job working as assistant to Secretary of Defense James Heller. Jack has also found a new love, Heller's daughter Audrey. As he visits CTU, an arrested terrorist is brought in. Jack, being Jack, knows something wrong.
I shouldn't go any further on story as I will ruin it if I do. This is by far my favorite season. This, in my opinion is when you see the ultimate Jack Bauer, who will do whatever necessary to protect America and those he cares for from an unpredictable, ruthless, and relentless enemy.
The changeup in the cast is startling at first, but I got used to it. Kiefer Sutherland is great this season as a different Jack, emotionally, as if he is coming closer to a new life, untortured by the memory of his late wife Teri Bauer(who was tragically murdered at the end of season 1).
Characters from past seasons return and add great new threads to weave in the plot. This is by far the best season and I recommend it to anyone who loves 24, or who love action movies, but wish they would last longer.

Movie Review: Best Thriller TV Series Delves Into Islamofascist Terror
Summary: 5 Stars

I got hooked on "24" by accident, missing nearly half of the episodes during the fourth season, before literally forcing myself to watch the rest. What I did see was well worth watching, not only for Kiefer Sutherland's fine portrayal of CTU agent Jack Bauer, but especially Arnold Vosloo's chilling portrayal of Islamic terrorist mastermind Habib Marwan, with whom Bauer would play a lethal game of cat and mouse (Incidentally South African actor Arnold Vosloo may be remembered best for his role as "The Mummy" in the recent film starring actor Brendan Fraser.). I saw how it escalated to the point where the Chinese become involved, leading to a surprise twist ending for Jack Bauer which sets up what will follow in Season 5.

This year's cast of "24" is replete with many excellent performances, most notably from Carlos Bernard (Tony Almeida), Reiko Aylesworth (Michelle Dessler), and Mary Lynn Rajskub (Chloe O'Brian) from the few members of the returning cast, as well as from William Devane (Secretary of Defense James Heller), Alberta Watson (Erin Driscoll) and Kim Raver (Audrey Heller Raines). Dennis Haysbert makes a surprising, yet reasonable, return as former U. S. president David Palmer. I would also note Angela Goethals's fine portrayal of Erin Driscoll's troubled teenage daughter Maya. But I regret having missed most of the superb performances of Iranian-born actress Shohreh Aghdashloo (She earned an Academy Award for her portrayal of the Iranian emigre wife in the film "House of Sand and Fog".) playing this season's most vile villain, Dina Araz, who was one of Marwan's senior lieutenants . Without question, I am looking forward to seeing what will unfold in the new season of "24".

Movie Review: One of the best shows currently in production for Broadcast TV.
Summary: 5 Stars

Love the show. Period. Have just finished watching the first 5 seasons (something of a marathon over the last month).

(Warning: some spoilers ahead.)
The first 3 seasons were good. But season 4 was far more complicated. Just as CTU seems to come to grips with one attack, it leads into something more sinister and larger than they had expected. The twists and turns just seem to keep coming, up through the very end. a very good season.

As to packaging and the discs themselves: the first 4 seasons come in fold-out packaging + outer sleeve, much like the Highlander series and a few others. The first discs contain the episodes themselves, and the last disc contains some bonus materials. There is also an option on the episode discs to view deleted or extended scenes in-line to the episode. Cool feature.

Season 4 continues to do a good job with chapter breaks, scene selection menus, and abonus features. Of course I don't have a large-screen/wide-screen TV or surround sound, so I can't test under all conditions. But if there were any video or audio issues I didn't notice them. Perhaps some moire/color issues in scenes with close parallel-line patterns. But I've noticed that on any number of DVD releases of other series from other studios, so I wouldn't say there was any more in 24 than other series.

Overall, I highly recommend this for anyone who hasn't seen 24, and who likes the spy/thriller type show. If you liked Alias and/or La Femme Nikita, you'll probably like 24 as well. There are some "intense" scenes and probably some harsh language, so preview episodes before showing it to any youngsters, if at all.

Movie Review: The Best keeps getting better every season.
Summary: 5 Stars

After 3 seasons on the hit FOX series 24, C.T.U. agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), is a man on edge. The toll of his job keeping the nation safe from terrorism has worn on him deeply, as have the numerous losses and addictions he has endured as part of his job.
At the Start of the shows 4th season, Jack seems to have put much of this behind him, as he has left C.T.U. in order to work for the Secretary of Defense. The fact that Jack has secretly been seeing the soon to be divorced daughter of the Secretary has seemingly put his life on track leaving his troubled past behind him.
This all changes when the Secretary and his daughter are kidnapped by terrorists who threaten to kill them both if their demands are not met. Before long Jack is drawn back into C.T.U. in an effort to save them, and soon realizes that the kidnapping is just the tip of the iceberg in what is going to be another very deadly and long day for Jack.
The 4th season of the show grabs you from the opening moments and never lets go. After 3 seasons, the real time concept has only grown stronger and the show has become even more addictive and topical with each passing year. The strong supporting cast and the gripping and intense work by Sutherland combined with the action and tension packed storylines not only makes the show addictive, but one of the best shows in television history.

The DVD Set is loaded with features such as deleted scenes, commentaries and a look at the upcoming 5th season including a prequel segment that connects the two seasons.

The best just keeps getting better

5 stars out of 5.

Movie Review: Warning: Season 5 "prequel" a BIG disappointment
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all let me say I am one of the biggest 24 fans out there. I have been watching since day 1 episode 1, and have thoroughly enjoyed every season since it debut. I have been purchasing the DVD sets because of all the extras: deleted scenes, commentaries, behind-the-scenes, etc. There are a ton of extras on all the DVD sets, and season 4 is no exception. There is an entire disc devoted to the extras for season 4.

However, one of the big pushes on the advertisements for the season 4 DVD set was that there was a prequel to season 5 that would serve to fill in the blanks, to show the viewers what has happened to Jack since the end of last season. Let me just say, in a word, the prequel is LAME. It gives absolutely no insight as to what has happened to Jack since the season 4 finale. (where has he been living? does he have a new family? a new job?) It also gives no indication of whats to come in season 5. (Who is hunting him? Is CTU involved? What about Audrey?) It's basically a 10-minute car chase - sponsored by Toyota - so all you're treated to is seeing Jack maneuver his Toyota around for 10 minutes trying to outrun the bad guys (who you never see). Basically a 10 minute Toyota commercial. You get to see 10 times more about season 5 on the 30-second TV ads on Fox. So the prequel was very disappointing. But of course the show itself still gets a 5 star rating. There's nothing better on TV. The DVD set is still worth purchasing for the enormous amount of other extras that are included. I just wanted to put in my 2 cents regarding the prequel. Can't wait for season 5!
