Movie Reviews of 24: Complete Seasons 1-7

Movie Review: Addictive
Summary: 5 Stars

The most addictive series we have ever watched. Don't think you can watch just one episode.

Movie Review: Good fun, high quality
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought these 7 seasons on advice from a friend never having seen an episode of 24 before that. I have watched the first 5 seasons by now.

Overall this is great entertainment. Each season is 24 episodes of about 40 minutes each (so about 16 hours to watch through a season)

There is lots of action, characters are life like and most of the acting is quite good (amusingly Kiefer is probably not the best, but then we see him a lot). We see a lot of personality conflicts, selfishness and there is even torture and rape is hinted at (the world is not pretty)

There is generally internal consistency to the stories and we get explanations as to why certain characters are acting in certain ways

The details are quite realistic but the overall storyline often is not simply because of the premise of the show: everything has to happen in 24 hours..... In the real world it does not work this way

The basic plot is always the same. There are some super terrorists with some evil and complicated plans to wreak havong on Los Angeles and Jack Bauer uses unorthodox methods with the support of a federal agency called CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit) to fight them

CTU gets better as seasons progress but still their recruitment policy seems to to focus on 4 types of personnel: the clearly incompetent, the traitors (who conversely are amazingly competent), the bureaucrats and the nerds. While the nerds are very good at fiddling around with electronic equipment and pulling data out of thin air, the rest of CTU cannot seem to complete event the simplest of tasks: for example transferring a prisoner from point A to point B (or even simply keeping a prisoner in jail) is simply too much of a task for CTU security personnel. In fact - a tradition that goes back to star trek- when you are shown a CTU security guard it generally means the guy will be dead within the next 5 minutes

There are a few other annoyances that stretch the patience of the viewer. The abundant use of presidential immunity granted right and left, the direct link to the president that most everyone seems to be able to call day and night, the recurrent "Let's declare Jack Bauer an outlaw so that he has to fight both the terrorists AND law enforcement in his spare time" theme and the recurrent "conspiracy at the highest level" theme ........ This is good for a couple of seasons but used every time it gets old.

Still the show is great fun, ranks among the best shows made so far for TV and watching it on DVD is great!... I often watch 3 (sometimes 4) episodes in a row

Movie Review: Great buy if you need to catch up with season eight
Summary: 4 Stars

Kinda hard to go wrong with the price on this set if you do not own any seasons. Only issue is that Redemption is not included and that the first season is just a repackaged version of the original release and not the special edition that came out a few years ago. The set itself is 47 discs spread out as follows:

24: Day One-6 discs (repackaged original release, NOT SPECIAL EDITION!)
24: Day Two-7 discs
24: Day Three-7 discs
24: Day Four-7 discs
24: Day Five-7 discs
24: Day Six-7 discs
24: Day Seven-6 discs

Day One in the set is light on special features as it's just a reissued back from a time when TV shows on DVD were just starting to catch on. Day Two to Day Six all have a seventh disc loaded with special features as well as additional features on the episode discs as well. As for Day Seven it's only six discs but this time around the features are spread around on all the discs.

If you don't own any season sets of 24 yet this'll be a great purchase for you. There's also still plenty of time to get caught up before the release of the final season in December. If you are looking for more detailed reviews of the seasons then keep your eyes open. I'll be reviewing all the currently released seasons in the coming weeks ^_~

Movie Review: Good 4 Stars

I bought this on a recommendation of a friend, I never really got into when they aired originally, I have "Bones" and "CSI NY"

It seems to be very good I am midway between season 2 at the moment, written by the same people who bought you "Le Femme Nikita" on USA network, it shares obvious similar styles.

The product is very good value for money I paid $161, (note that season 1 by itself is $47.49) , so if you can afford it, buy it all at once.
I will not get into plots/criticms/etc, my comment is on the product itself.

a) DO NOT read the backs of any seasons you have not watched, I started reading the text on the back of the season 2 case and it contained a HUGE spoiler, thankfully I had just finished watching season 1 so it was fine, but had I not, it would have really spoiled things.

Lastly, some of the reasons we buy TV shows on DVD is to watch it at our leisure, NO annoying adverts and to watch them back to back.

So far there is no PLAY ALL function on the DVD menu, which I think is a major omission

Movie Review: Great buy overall - missing 5 star as set did not include Redemption DVD
Summary: 4 Stars

Enjoyed the series greatly. Wife & I watched it together over a few weeks/months. It is awesome to be able to watch the series in such a way without having to wait weeks for the TV show to develop. Did not give 5 Stars as the 24 Season 6/7 Redemption DVD was not included. Somehow, should have known it was not included, but having series 1-7 not include the movie in between series 6 & 7 keeps it from having 5 stars.
