Movie Review: I think I would have liked a better fight out of the Tigers
Summary: 4 Stars
Although we are reviewing a DVD or VHS tape I do not think that the reviews are intended to get into technical issues about the tape or DVD. It should to the material content, the use of editing and the drama on the field that should be mentioned. I prefer not to worry too much about technical quality. I don't think the differences are that great or that imprtant to mention.
This was a great year for the Tigers. Jim Leyland took over and righted the ship getting the team off to a amazingly great start that helped build their confidence in themselves and their new manager. To come out ahead of the Yankees, Red Sox and the defending Champion Chicago White Sox was a great feat.
The Cardinal who had been humiliated by the Red Sox in 2004 were finally able to bring a championship to St Louis for an Albert Pujols led team. But the Cardinals have the most championships of any National League teaams and the Tigers hadn't won since 1984. But this series was one where the Tigers were dominated.

It is, quite simply, the beauty of baseball.
The 2006 post-season began with a bevy of favorites. The Detroit Tigers?? tore through the American League?? with their 100 MPH pitchers. The New York Mets?? laid to waste the National League East??. The Oakland A's?? had a starting rotation that frightened most everyone. And the New York Yankees?? featured one of the greatest lineups of all time. The St. Louis Cardinals?? were also in the playoffs -- but just barely. In the final weeks, the Cardinals lost eight of nine, watched their seven game lead disappear and just missed being eliminated. No team that finished a full season with 83 wins had ever won a World Series??. According to experts, the Cardinals had no chance.
And that's the beauty of baseball.
St. Louis beat San Diego in the NLDS?? and shocked the mighty Mets in the NLCS??. In the World Series, they faced the heavily-favored Detroit Tigers team that had a week's worth of rest. But the St. Louis starters and rookie closer Adam Wainright held the Tigers to just eleven runs through five games. Yadier Molina, Scott Rolen and Jim Edmonds came up huge at the plate. And the consummate gamer - 5'7" shortstop David Eckstein hit .364 and became the first National League shortstop to be named World Series MVP.
When the smoke cleared, the Cardinals emerged from the pack of behemoths with the team's 10th World Series victory - the second most of all time. Tony LaRussa became just the second manager in MLB history to win a World Series title in both leagues. It was all inexplicable, delightfully improbable and deliciously poetic. It's the beauty of baseball, and it's why they play the game.
The 2006 World Series: Tigers vs. Cardinals DVD is really the story of the underdog team from St. Louis. Not that the Detroit Tigers are ignored. But the Cardinals took the championship within five games despite a lousy regular season--a mere 83 wins--proving that baseball is not a game of statistics but of whatever dramas are happening on the field in the here-and-now. 2006 World Series, narrated by Cardinals fan Billy Bob Thornton, takes viewers through the team's many post-season dramas, beginning with the National League championship series in which the Cards faced the seemingly superior New York Mets. What matters, the team's players and manager Tony La Russa declare in interviews, is not the numbers but relentless, hard work--keeping the fire alive until something breaks in one's favor. Indeed, as one can see from this disc's thoughtful analysis and great storytelling, things began to click for the Cardinals right when they needed it. Besides taki! ng a close look at the lead-up to the World Series, this documentary dissects each game in the championship competition. (We also see a generous amount of film footage from the last couple of times--most recently in 1968--the Cards faced the Detroit Tigers in the World Series.) There's a lot to love here: action on the field, the history of La Russa's close friendship with Tigers' manager Jim Leyland, player insights, Thornton's compelling narration.
