Movie Reviews of 1900 (Special Collector's Edition)

Movie Review: Terrible
Summary: 1 Stars

When I first saw this in the video store years ago, I was pretty excited. After all, this is a Bertolucci film with not just DeNiro and Depardieu, but Lancaster, Sterling Hayden, and Donald Sutherland. Then I wondered why a film from a particularly wonderful period for filmmaking such as this was never talked about in the same breath as The Godfather, Nashville, or other epics. This has all the makings of a grand statement by one of the world's premier filmmakers.

After years of procrastinating, I've finally viewed it. Sorry to say, I now know exactly why 1900 is never talked about. It is a terribly acted, simplistic, and borderline offensive movie. I half expected DeNiro to look into the camera and cry out to his friend Martin Scorsese, begging for rescue. Gerard Depardieu's character is so Noble and Good that he doesn't even resemble a real person. Sutherland seems to have had his brain pickled in LSD during the shoot, since his performance belongs in a Monty Python sketch. For that type of role done perfectly, go see Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List.

When I refer to this film as being offensive, I mean that this film presents both sides in incredibly one-dimensional terms. The Evil fascists apparently spend all of their time killing cats, old women, and cackling maniacally. The peasants apparently can't express themselves in any way unless led by Gerard Depardieu, and even then all they do is mumble incoherently and slice of their own ears.

I realize much of this film is symbolic, and that the characters are probably supposed to be archetypes. But that doesn't excuse the fact that this is simply an inept and barely watchable mess. Kepp in mind I'm saying this as Bertolucci fan. I love The Conformist and Last Tango in Paris and The Spider's Stratagem. But this film is quite possibly the worst I've ever seen. You might say "What about all those awful straight-to-cable films with Dolph Lundgren? Or those erotic thrillers with Shannon Tweed?" I know about those, and this is worse. At least those films have no pretense and don't want to be taken seriously. This film has pretense in spades, begs to be taken seriously, and is all the worse for it. Run with me, friends....away from this film.
